Excellent

I was trained by the author John Fischer at the CIA. He is an excellent teacher of the FoH Art. It is truely an art to wait on people and give the guest every thing they could possibly want or need. John is a great and excellent teacher that dove into the realms of the ways and hows and whats to do and when to do it sequences. I got to see him in action behind a bar one afternoon serving up as the bartender that did not show that day. He was knowledgable about wines and bar drinks showing some razzle dazzle! He was "the man" when I had him. Thanks John and for even signing my book...guy

Move over remarkable service.

I attended the Culinary Institute of America and was trained by Mr. Fischer. I cannot imagine a single resource that does so much to demistify the key essentials of successful service than this reference. I recommend it to anyone in the industry or interested in the industry. The old standard (the bible until now) for front of the house reference has been remarkable service. An information filled text-book but a remarkably boring and mundane read. Entertaining, Original, Insightful, and Educational this is your one stop reading for front of the house.

I had the original version for many years. My son just went off to college and I bought his house one. They all love it. The Thanksgiving Pumpkin Pie is the best pumpkin pie recipe I have ever had….it gets rave reviews from everyone who comes to our house for the holiday.

I have this book myself and I ordered 4 more of them to give as gifts. I make a lot of pies and the recipes in this book are really excellent! The butterscotch peach is especially good! And the mixed fruit pie! Also the book gives you a lot of interesting basic pie info. This is my favorite pie book! I would highly recommend it.

About the Author
Stefan Zweig was born in 1881 in Vienna, into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family. He studied in Berlin and Vienna and was first known as a poet and translator, then as a biographer. Between the wars, Zweig was an international bestseller with a string of hugely popular novellas including Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok and Fear. In 1934, with the rise of Nazism, he left Austria, and lived in London, Bath and New York--a period during which he produced his most celebrated works: his only novel, Beware of Pity, and his memoir, The World of Yesterday. He eventually settled in Brazil, where in 1942 he and his wife were found dead in an apparent double suicide. Much of his work is available from Pushkin Press.

Good introduction to Zweig's writing

An interesting collection of 5 novellas, two of which I had read previously. In both cases, this second reading had been helpful in opening up Zweig's methods for me. As I read this collection I came to see, more and more, the manner in which he builds tension casually in his tales, through simple variations on everyday actions. A person may step away for a moment from a stifling situation, taking a refreshing or necessary break that somehow turns his/her life upside down and threatens their entire future. Of the five novellas only one, "Journey into the Past." did not create that tension for me and two of the ones that are new to me, "Fear" and "Confusion", both did it quite effectively. The others are "A Chess Story," as effective as when first read, and "A Burning Secret," somehow better than when I first encountered it.

Another thing I have learned from this collection is to have patience, to allow the writer to build up his characters and setting before providing the "meat" I am looking for. In this respect, perhaps I am a modern person/reader, wanting everything too quickly. The further removed I am from these stories, the more I realize that the tension I felt and found so effective simply would not have existed without that (seemingly) too slow build-up. So perhaps I am learning as a reader too.

I do recommend this book to those who enjoy Zweig and others who may be looking for a new author to try.

Moral page-turners

In 4 of these 5 novellas, Stefan Zweig captures the anguish of love deemed illicit by social mores. Social conventions generate fear, confusion, shame, and damage in a range of different love relationships, one of which Zweig portrays as predatory, but the others as natural and genuine loves. He allows the moderation of compassion and redemptive love, in one case from a young son, in another from a devoted husband. In ‘A Chess Story’, even cruel Nazi interrogation has an unforeseen redemptive outcome. Zweig paints a richly detailed picture of events, and internal human reaction and response. We recognise the dilemmas and are anxious to discover the outcomes in Zweig’s moral page-turners.

An excellent work, with so many surprises inside. Zweig's ability to provide time and place is seconded only by his care in introducing believable characters. This is some of the best writing I've ever read, and I can't recommend this collection strongly enough.

About the Author

Robert W. Kaps, a professor of aviation management in the Department of Aviation Management and Flight at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, has over thirty years of experience in labor and industrial relations, including work for a major airline.

 

J. Scott Hamilton is a professor of management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and has practiced aviation law for over thirty years, including aviation labor relations; in government as assistant attorney general; and in aviation management as general counsel and chief operating officer.

An associate professor of aviation management at Oklahoma State University and the holder of the Roger Hardesty Endowed Chair in Aviation Science, Timm Bliss has more than twenty years of experience in higher education and public service.

Great for college

Received this when I was in school. Amazon rent is probably the best place to get the books you need. Grant it they do not have all the books you will need but most of them they will. I was even able to find some that my instructors said that I may have an issue finding. Amazon rent saved me a ton of money and I recommend it for any and everyone in school. If you are going to be a little late on your return they can extend your rental for a low fee with out having to buy the book at full cost returning the books are easy as well. This in itself should inspire folks to get out there and get their degree.

Wanted to Like it More

This book had such a good plot idea, and it started out strong. But for me it starting going downhill about the middle of the book. My main beef? The attraction between Brock and Bailey started to seem so "High School". Be warned if you don't like bad language, the author seemed quite fond of the "F" word; at least in this story. Once there was sex, there was a lot of it. Even though the story does get all wrapped up, I agree with another reviewer that it gets done pretty fast. I do like that the author did an epilogue; I always appreciate that in a story I've invested my time in.
Just as a side note..it was hard for me to believe that she was being safeguarded and even though some of the danger was past (but not all) she was allowed to go out on a couple of outings. Yes, I know she was followed for her protection but that was still a bit hard for me to swallow.

When is the next?

What a great story. This is not your typical witness protection story. The story keeps you interested in what will happen next while not drawing out the mystery too much. The author has laid a great foundation for a series. There are some steamy parts and the author used a curse word frequently that I thought added nothing to the conversation. The recap of the story line is very accurate and is what interested me in reading the book. I was given a copy in exchange for a honest review. With that said, I would purchase the next in this series.

Hoping it gets better...

The book immediately drew me in,and then it was anti-climatic. The characters could have been given more depth, but maybe that will come in the next installments. I feel like the ending was tied together too quickly. That being said, once I start a series, I try to finish it. I will give the next book a shot.
