SLT-A77/David Busch

As a novice in the SLR/SLT camera world I went to a camera store to enter the expanded world of photography. I was convinced the A77 was the first and last camera I would need. When I got the camera home holy cow it was a lot more complicated than I thought. It takes awesome pics but I was using about 1% of its capabilities. I thought I needed much more info than what came with the camera. I purchased David Busch's book and as I read it in plain English it makes the functions easy to understand and I am beginning to use more and more of the cameras capabilities. Ii highly recommend this book for anyone that has the A77.

Terrific guide to the new Alpha 77 camera. Every function described in detail and illustrated with full color large and easy to read screen shots and sample photos. It would be a pity to purchase this fine camera and not know how to use its many features which are not at all obvious, especially to users accustomed to the Canon EOS functions and menu. One section to get you stared with setup and the basics. Followed by chapters covering each feature and function in full detail. If you're switching from CANON EOS to Sony Alpha, get this book.

I have had my A77 for several months but there were some functions (of the many) that were simply not explained anywhere until I got this book. All my questions were addressed here. Get this, you won't be disappointed!

A Much Needed Book

Interestingly enough, little to no training on the nature of science is given to graduate or undergraduate science students. This is a crime, in my opinion. How are we to expect the students we are training to become quality scientists without educating them on what science is, how it came to be, and what it can and cannot answer?

This book does a fantastic job of summarizing everything that a scientist needs to be aware of when designing an experiment, but it does so while emphasizing the importance of thinking of science in the larger picture rather than simply trying to support or disprove a hypothesis.

Must read book for all those designing their own experiments

The second edition of Experimental Design for Biologists offers all of the practical and insightful suggestions of the original, but with an improved flow, better organizational scheme, and more useful examples. Throughout the book, Dr. Glass lays out how proper implementation of the scientific method requires one to ask the right questions, how different experiments require different frameworks, and how data should be interpreted so as to minimize the potential for confirmation bias. Broadening the reader's understanding of experimental design, the book helps fortify the essential tools that one needs to be a fully competent fundamental scientist.

This book is highly recommended for all those running their own experiments, especially young researchers.

Reliable recipes from a dog expert

This was a timely purchase for me because the other day I was at the supermarket looking for a treat for my dog and I actually took the time to read all of the ingredients on the manufactured treats. Well, I was utterly disgusted and refused to buy any of those so-called treats! To start with, “mechanically reclaimed meat” is gruesome, let alone the amount of colours, additives and preservatives they also packed in. It seems the best solution is to make my own treats at home.

I was really grateful for the section on foods which are toxic to dogs. Last year I had the unfortunate experience of giving my dog part of an old leftover muffin and, only after he had eaten it all, remembering that it had sultanas in it. I felt so guilty! Worse, though, was that when I mentioned it to the rest of the household, no-one else even knew that dogs shouldn’t eat grapes. It’s absolutely vital that we all know which foods are toxic to dogs so that we can keep our pets healthy.

As for foods which are good for dogs, I was pleased to see that yoghurt is okay. My dog loves natural yoghurt and I often give him a spoonful, but I was never really sure whether or not it was healthy. What a relief!

I can’t wait to try the recipes in this book. Knowing that the author – Vikk Simmons – is a long-time dog lover and owner, not to mention blogger and book author, gives me the confidence that I can really trust the information in this book. Highly recommended!

I like knowing the author makes these treats for her own pets. She addresses the topics of nutrition, health and a pet's age. My old guy is difficult at 15 years of age and he likes his new senior treats. Ms. Simmons has written a recipe book filled with tidbits of the do's and don't's about pet treats. Even if you have no oven, there are no-bake recipes. The book has something for everyone and their furry kids.

Recipes are easy, but at the expense of fresh ingredients

Many of the recipes call for premade baby food (which contains preservatives and sometimes even ingredients that can be harmful to dogs) or wheat flour (many dogs can have allergies to wheat). If I had seen this in a bookstore, I would not have purchased it.

I would not recommend this book.

About the Author
Na'ima B. Robert is descended from Scottish Highlanders on her father's side and the Zulu people on her mother's side. She was born in Leeds, grew up in Zimbabwe and attended Queen Mary & Westfield College in London, where she was introduced to Black British culture and served as African-Caribbean Society president. She has written several books, including From My Sisters Lips and four novels for young adults: 'From Somalia, with Love'; 'Boy vs Girl'; 'Black Sheep'; and the award-winning 'Far From Home'. Na’ima is founder and Editor-in-Chief of SISTERS, a magazine for Muslim women and Discover, an educational magazine. Heartfelt book of poetry

Na'ima B. Robert has reached deep into her soul to bring these words to the surface. A soul-stirring read, with pauses to think about the careful choice of words by the author, is an enlightening experience.

This book touched me in ways no book has. I loved all the poems. Couldnt decide on a favourite. For a while it was 'catch me' then 'at least'. Only Sis Naima would take loss and turn it into something so amazing ma sha Allah.

Lina, once again, rejects the offer. The following day, as forewarned, Zelgadis attacks and captures Lina, who had the foresight to give the loot to Gourry, who ends up escaping. Unable to find the treasure, Zelgadis decides to use Lina to his advantage, rather than kill her. Just as he is releasing her, Rezo walks in; Lina makes the connection that Rezo and Zelgadis are in cahoots. Zelgadis, a victim of the wrath of Rezo, decides to team up with Lina, revealing to her the truth about his past. Rezo, in search of the Stone, sends trolls, berserkers, and weremantises after the duo. The Red Priest, captures Lina, demanding the Stone in exchange for her life. Gourry hands over the Stone, which Rezo then swallows. When Rezo's eyes open, they are not human eyes, but rather red holes - the beginning of his transformation into the dark lord, Ruby Eye Shabranigudo, who later killed by Lina's spell, Giga Slave. Lina, Gourry, and Zelgadis travel together a few days, before they arrive at the City of Atlas, where Zelgadis departs and follows his own course. Lina decides to travel with Gourry until he hands over the coveted Sword of Light.

For fans of the anime and non-fans alike

I've been a fan of the Slayers anime for years and years and when I heard that Tokyopop was finally going to bring the novels that inspired the anime to the US, I couldn't wait to get out there and grab it. And thankfully it was everything I was hoping for. Tokyopop has done an excellent job of translating the novel while still preserving the unique brand of humor and action that makes Slayers so interesting in the first place. At less than 200 pages, the book isn't long, but it's relatively self-contained so you're not breathlessly swearing about an evil cliffhanger or anything. The novel retains the original illustrations that the Japanese version had and, while not necessary, they're nice to have.

Fans of the show will probably love the novel, it covers the first part of the first season of the anime very closely (or vice versa, as the case may be). But non-fans should find a lot to enjoy about it as well. It's well written and is a very fast read (I read it in just over an hour) and it's very entertaining, with lots of action and humor. The only bad part about the novel is that it's so very short and you want to read more right away.

Lives up to the anime

I love this book, and the series. I'm a bit bias because I love the anime as well. However, the book is well made, interesting, and funny. The author also silently breaks the forth wall. You can never be certain if Lina is directly talking to the reader, but it feels like it fairly often. If you like fantasy with comic relief, this might be a good book for you.

I recall reading the second book years ago, It might be nostalgia but I recall that book being better than this one. Not to say that it's bad, it follows a good 80% of the Anime series.

A Phenomenal Read

A perfect 6.0 on technical merit and artistic interpretation! `Set Phasers on Stun' is a fascinating series of 20 true stories about human factors, user interface design, and design-induced human error. Like a well-told fable used to enforce a useful truth, each story cleverly teaches you something interesting and instructive about the importance of the user interface in modern technology. Casey tells each story from the perspective of the user of the thing or system, so you can really see how people get sucked into a particular situation and understand the unfortunate consequences of the designer's decisions. There is a good blending of technical detail, emotion, and great writing. Addressed are, among other things, a crash in the Airbus computerized cockpit, a Soviet space fatality, assorted medical errors (`Set Phasers on Stun' - - the title story about a patient being zapped during a radiation treatment), the launching of a rocket inside a building in Sweden, a diving accident, the Bhopal disaster, and the supertanker Torrey Canyon. I was originally introduced to this book in an engineering class, and it really "turned on the light" as the saying goes.

Steve Casey has provided a valuable service to engineers, designers, and human factors professionals with his true tales of design-induced human error. These engaging stories range from disasters at sea and failures of space systems, to casualties caused by inappropriate procedures and the packaging of consumer items. The lesson from each story is different, but there is a single theme: the incidents could have been avoided if proper attention had been paid to the user during the design of the item or system. I have given copies of Set Phasers on Stun to several people to illustrate the importance of considering human limitations, as well as capabilities, when designing systems for human use. The book is an entertaining read for anyone. I highly recommend Set Phasers on Stun.

Engaging and informative

A number of friends had recommended "Set Phasers on Stun" to me as a good book on technology and human error. The 20 short stories in the book cover everything from the accidental launching of a rocket to some horrific accidents in hospitals. Each story is written in a way that takes the reader on an engaging, informative, and, quite often, wild ride. Casey's writing style works perfectly with this short story format. I highly recommend "Set Phasers on Stun" to anyone interested in design and technology, or anyone who likes reading very good short stories. The best part is that all of the events covered

by the book are true.

For scholars, students or just anyone who is interested in the life of Yup'ik people, their history, social organization and cultural traditions, this is a solid basic text. The author, well-known expert on the region, portrays social changes, which occurred in the Bering region in the 20th century, and shows their implications for today.

How To Use The Law of Attraction To Quit Your Day Job - thank goodness there are no "ordinary" people!

One of the good things about Kindle publishing is you can get to read the work of people who might never otherwise have been published. The bad thing about it is sometimes you get to read the work of people who ought never to have been published!

Thankfully, Trevor Emdon is not one of them.

I have a couple of his online courses and it's clear from his book How To Use The Law of Attraction To Quit Your Day Job, Trevor is clearly not only talking the talk, but walking the walk - very successfully too!

His conversational language and use of stories and metaphors make this book an engaging read. He talks about changing states, NLP and universal laws, none of which are original ground breaking revelations, BUT the way Trevor explains them make them infinitely more understandable than anything else I've ever read on the subject.

His book emphasises the fact just as there is no original content, there are no "ordinary" people, and anyone and everyone has something to offer! All it usually takes is a bit of self belief! A Life In Rhyme - Life's Observations: Rhyming Verse and Story Poems

This book resonated with me! It made me want to go get a job so I could quit it! Even though I am retired, ‘How to Use the Law of Attraction to Quit Your Day Job’ spoke to me personally, for I still have dreams that need going for - but for the fears that stop me and leave me feeling unfulfilled. It was almost like reading a letter from a far-away friend that I haven’t seen in a long time, telling me the very practical, doable steps they took to skirt around the fear that had kept them stuck.
Fear keeps us stuck in mediocrity, no matter what our vocation! ‘How to Use the Law of Attraction…’ offers many unique insights into The Law of Attraction, and is an encouraging, friendly, self-help guide that has stirred me to face my fears and take action for my dreams! It truly delivers!

About the Author

Cathy has been a foster carer for over 20 years, during which time she has looked after more than 70 children, of all ages and backgrounds. Cathy runs training courses on fostering for her local Social Services, and helps draft new fostering procedures and guidelines. She has three teenage children of her own; one of whom was adopted after a long-term foster placement. The name Cathy Glass is a pseudonym.

A suspenseful but endearing read...

I just finished reading a Baby's Cry by one of my favourite authors, Cathy Glass. This time, her foster child is a newborn, shrouded by great mystery about his identity and why he is being given up for adoption. Cathy and family become attached to baby Harrison,as does another person who is at the crux of the mystery. Some horrific memories of abuse at home by another child being cared for as a respite case are also depicted. Reminds us of the important role foster carers take in our society. Cathy's stories are engaging reads and hard to put down. Her website gives updates on the children who are the subjects of her true experiences of fostering.

Great read.

As a foster parent for many years I liked this book for its accurate description of the life of a foster parent. It was a great example of how the system should work yet, sadly, often does not. Saying goodbye to children you have loved and raised for a length of time is difficult. I would recommend it to those considering being a foster parent.
