Too Pricey by $20
By A Reviewer
I do have one of these. I would love to order this for my 150 students. But in the area of $30 for 80 pages? Let's get real. It's a great source, but someone's not being realistic here. It isn't one of the authors, who has passed on. Nine or ten dollars would be fair, and a greater quantity of books sold would yield publisher and author a greater royalty.

A Must Have for the Grammar Geek
By Regina Gore
A slim volume but chock a block full of information. The first day I got it I answered a tricky quotation mark question for a fellow editor.. Major geek, I know.
I disagree with a previous reviewer who dinged the book for being too expensive to buy for her all her students. Review the content, please. Text books, and those with limited runs, will always be more expensive. We're so spoiled by being able to look anything up online for free that we forget authors have a right to make money from their intellectual property.

From Publishers Weekly
Vargas, a longtime corporate and community consultant, approaches social activism with high ideals, a positive viewpoint and, most helpfully, a practical and gratifying plan of action, based in his personal experience and cultural heritage. The "Familia Approach" treats activism not as a solo enterprise but as "a way of living so as to teach love and activate the positive power of our families and communities." Vargas unpacks the Mexican idea of familia and finds enfolded within its notion of the extended family-"everyone you care for and who cares for you"-the American passion for social activism. Each chapter expands on this idea, including reflection questions and bullet-point "practices," with much insight into Vargas's own family and Latino culture in general (both modern and ancient). Though not religious, Vargas is "spiritual," and does consider prayer and indigenous religious practices (like unity circles) important and powerful. Equally important, however, is real human understanding, for which he introduces the surprisingly complex concept of conocimento-conversation meant to deepen participants' knowledge of each other. Vargas's text, full of new agisms like "transformation," "energy" and "synergy," will strike some readers as redundant, but those ready to share in Vargas's passion will find much to learn.

From the Back Cover

Social Change Begins at Home

We live in a world that needs radical transformation if our children and grandchildren are to live healthy, peace-filled lives. But where to start?

Activist Roberto Vargas says the answer lies surprisingly close: at home, with our family and friends. We can apply the practice of family activism to foster what he calls familia--warm, loving connections with our relatives and with those we choose to call family--and develop the skills and attitudes we need to tackle broader problems in our community, our nation, and the world. In Family Activism, Vargas draws from his own life to show how to apply tools such as copowering communication, family councils, and unity circles to create family and community cultures that empower all of us to become more committed and skillful agents of positive change.

"By sharing parts of his personal journey Roberto Vargas provides us with important facilitation tools and insights that we can all use to create more caring, compassionate, and engaged families and communities."
--Danny Glover, activist and actor

"Roberto Vargas's path of family engagement will save lives and help families to know true `family values,' which start with love and support at home and spread to community involvement and social change."
--Don Hazen, Executive Editor, AlterNet

"The communication, ceremony, and facilitation tools that Roberto Vargas shares can make us all more loving family members and better activists and leaders within any of our organizations and communities."
--Akaya Windwood, President and CEO, Rockwood Leadership Program

A must read for creating a heathly and engaged family
By Eduardo Salaz
Have you ever struggled to find a way to make family gatherings meaningful, nurturing and inspiring? Read this book and you will struggle no longer!!!

Family Activism is perhaps one of the best books I have ever read that provides strategies, tool and proven methodolgies for creating healthy and engaged families. The power of the talking stick is one wonderful tool for creating powerful and authentic conversations for birthday celebrations, weddings, baptisms, graduations and other venues where you bring family members togethers in a meaningful and inspiring way.

I also enjoyed learning more about how the process for creating great families can be used in the corporate and public sectors. I was inspired to learn how Dr. Vargas has taken these tools to many corporate environments and has introduced a mechanism to help leaders engage their teams in powerful ways. Dr. Vargas also shared how the tools of family activism can generate authentic, honest and real sharing which leads to greater familiarity, trust, unity and eventually greater results.

I believe this is a must read for anyone interested in investing in a nurturing family, a great community and engaging great teams. What a treasure and again a must read if we are to create a better world, beginning with family and friends!

If you want to deepen the trust and respect in your family, buy this book.
By J. Oyola
As an activist, my passion is to improve the quality of life for our communities and strengthen our diverse democracy. This requires a lifetime of work and one needs a strong support structure to face new challenges each day. This book's premise is that positive social change also begins with one's family and close relationships. Creating a healthy family circle enriches ourselves and further propels us to live out our purpose. The author provides simple tools and perspectives that if implemented, can create safe family dialogues that validate our different opinions and honor each other. I can see myself using some of these tools, such as establishing a family council with my mom, uncle and grandfather. I will also buy my good friend, who is a new dad in Oakland, a copy for his new family.

Transformative and Inspiring
By Julian Canek Pena Vargas
Roberto Vargas unites theory and practice in this concise and compelling book. Through these pages, the reader will find insight into a life time of family based activism.

Vargas reminds us that the personal IS in fact political and that social and global transformation begins with the transformation of our interpersonal relationships, as family, community, and peers.

This book is filled with rich and compelling examples from from the authors own life as well as insightful reflections.

I highly recommend it.

A must-read book for aspiring pros and curious readers
By Andrew Bloch
Gambling Wizards is a must read whether you're aspiring to become a professional gambler or are just curious about what makes real pros tick. The book contains advice more valuable than any gambling "secret." You will learn from their successes, but more importantly, you learn from their mistakes without having to make them yourself. Read how some of them stumbled at first and went broke (perhaps multiple times), and then went on to make millions. Learn what's most important in being a great gambler -- there are a couple of things much more important than being the greatest player and playing perfectly. Best of all, you read it straight from the point of view of the players themselves, not distorted by an author's agenda.
Even seasoned gamblers, like myself, will benefit from reading the book, by reinforcing important ideas. I for one wish I could have read this book years ago -- I definitely would have made a lot more money.

My favourite gambling book (out of more than 50!)
By Fredrik Engel
This book has made me more money than any "How-to" book. The first time I read it, it was "only" entertainment. I thought "This was a really funny book, but I did not learn much". However, it was amazing how often I come to think of one passage or another while contemplating how to bet! I kept re-reading it, getting very useful hints on what to look for. It is now two years ago since I first read it and I got another one of these "flashbacks" while reading Ziemba's paper om horse betting markets. I though "Didn't they mentioned this in Gambling Wizards?" They sure did - along with one expert telling you why the PhDs model is flawed! All in all, I have been reading over 50 gambling books and this has given me the most help along the way - even though it is not even a "How to" book! My highest recommendation. Get ready to be both entertained and educated.

A short intro to each person interviewed then a Q&A format from there on, some questions have some prior research on the part of the author so he knew which way to lead the conversation as well as a couple standard questions asked each person like "If your teenager came to you and wanted to be a professional gambler, what would you say?".
What I liked about this book the most is the personal information learned about these very famous gamblers. How they started on the road of gambling, personality, views on other gamblers and what it is like to be a professional gambler. I didn't expect them to be so candid and honest. The stereotype that most gamblers are liars hooked on drugs and alcohol didn't even come close to being upheld, most of them talk about having a great routine of exercise and are either completely against drinking and drugs or very infrequently touch it, especially while "working".
There are some really great stories about things that they've gone through, some shaken down by the government/police for money or flat out robbed by someone waiting in the parking lot. Being a millionaire one day, broke the next, and back again the day after. The gamblers don't give up secrets about particular games, which is something I didn't expect to see anyway since every time someone does then everyone knows and it doesn't work anymore.
The book is what you would expect if you were buying based on the title, candid conversations with professional gamblers. I enjoyed it.

Amazon.com Review
The city of Rome is the largest archeological site in the world. If your idea of a good Roman holiday is uncovering the archeological mysteries of the Roman Empire, then Oxford Archeological Guides: Rome is your ideal guidebook.

For such a detailed guide, this book is remarkably readable. Of the Field of Mars (Campus Martius), Claridge writes, It is the one part of Rome which continued to be quite densely inhabited after the C9 AD, becoming the center of the late medieval and Renaissance city, and is still densely inhabited today, an extraordinary blend of past and present even for Rome. The Stock Exchange occupies a Roman temple, the boiler-rooms of the offices of the Senate are set in the ruins of Roman thermal baths, a modern theatre nestles in the shell of a Roman theatre. Many of the streets are on the lines of ancient streets, and the walls of the buildings on either side of them are often balanced directly on top of Roman walls. Among this Oxford guide's special features are 200 site plans, maps, diagrams, and photographs; a cultural and historical overview; a chronological overview; and a glossary of essential terms. It uses star ratings to help you plan your days and divides Rome into 12 main areas: the Roman Forum, Upper Via Sacra, Palatine Hill, Imperial Forums, Campus Martius, Capitoline Hill, Circus Flaminius to Circus Maximus, Colosseum Valley and Esquiline Hill, Caelian Hill and the Via Appia, other sites, museums, and catacombs.

Shaded sidebars add anecdotal interest, covering issues such as the Seven Hills, Jupiter's Dining Room, Tomb of Bibulus, the "Province" Reliefs, Madam Lucretia, Nero's New Palace, and Gladiatorial Shows. --Kathryn True

Unique guide for the archaeology minded traveler to Rome
By suetonius
The little known Oxford Archaeological Guides series provides information that you cannot find elsewhere. This guide was written by Amanda Claridge in 1998 and gives information about many of the archaeological sites of Rome. Sites are described in great detail with an emphasis on how the site might have looked in ancient times and changes occurring over centuries. Famous artifacts that were once part of these sites are described and their present locations are mentioned. You learn where in the baths of Caracalla the famous Farnese Hercules and Farnese Bull were located and you learn how they came to be in the archaeological museum at Naples. There are little known sites like the tomb of the Scipios as well as places as familiar as the Piazza Navona and the Colloseum. Obscure but fascinating information is given: the great brick reinforcing wedge on the southeast side of the Colloseum was built in 1807: I have not seen this information anywhere else. The oval Piazza Navona is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian of 86 AD; the stores that line its periphery are built on top of the ancient seating. This book would not be suitable as the only guidebook to take with you on a trip, the information provided is far too specialized. I'd recommend taking along the Michelin Green guide or the Knopf guide for Rome as well. Some minor drawbacks: the drawings and maps are not as detailed as they could be and the few photographs that are provided are black and white and of poor quality. These complaints are not critical flaws; the book would still be invaluable even if it didn't contain a single illustration.

Great Archaeological History of Rome
By clwinter
Claridge's Oxford Guide to Rome is probably the best out there today among the many, many ancient guides to Rome. The guide is steeped in research and archaeological evidence which is perfect for the first time visitor to Rome.

The maps and plans that she includes are extremely helpful to the visitor since some of the sites are merely a pile of rocks and might be difficult to visualize in their ancient glory. The plans and cross-sections of buildings and areas of Rome are essential to understanding the ancient city when it was complete.

This guide also comes in handy when visiting the Roman Forum and the Imperial Fora as the buildings are not extremely well marked nor do they have much information to provide for the visitor. If you ever go to the Forum you MUST have Claridge with you because it is the only way you can begin to comprehend the complexity of the Forum. Claridge's details and historical facts that she adds to each building are essential.

As difficult as it is for the untrained visitor to try and extricate the buildings and monuments that were built at the same time or before and after one another, Claridge does a good job in trying to convey the urban growth of Rome. She does this but her clear descriptions and helpful plans.

Essential to any visitor to Rome, especially any history or archaeological buff.

Excellent Guide to Ancient Rome
By R. Alessi
I just returned from Rome, using this book as my primary guide. We were able to identify almost every random bit of ancient archaelogy sticking out of the ground as we walked about the city, and if you've been to Rome, you'll understand how impressive that is.

A major shortcoming that I noticed is that the book treats the ancient-era churches very lightly: while the myths of gods such as Pollux and Castor are frequently referenced in relation to the ancient sites, the C1 AD story of Saint Clement is inexplicably left out of the section on the church of San Clemente constructed by Constantine. Also, as the author states in the beginning, the intent of this guide is to detail ancient Rome only. If you are interested in medieval, Renaissance, or ecclessiastic history, you will certainly need a supplemental guide.

Now, for the advantages... The guide systematically presents every ancient structure in Rome (we were never disappointed), providing a very good map at the beginning of each chapter for a major area (e.g. the Palatine, Field of Mars) to help you identify what you are looking at. The site is laid out in a sort of walking tour format and if you begin at the point suggested, you can follow the chapter page by page as it logically guides you through the region. We did find that writing in page references for each location on the map at the beginning made the book much easier to use. For more complicated buildings, additional diagrams are provided in the appropriate subsection where it is further detailed. The Baths of Caracalla are a superb example of this.

While Claridge delves a bit too thoroughly into the exact type of marble used in the facing and floors of each building, you find yourself recognizing the materials and envisioning the baths, basillicas, and forums as they might have looked clad in Phyrgian red and Numidian yellow marbles. With frequent referencing, we soon became familiar with Caracella, Domitian, and Nerva as we viewed the great construction projects they enacted. The author presents quite clearly the historical origin and significance of each site as well as its original appearance (if known) and the many refurbishments it went through with the frequent fires of Rome.

For our trip, we opted out of taking any tours, and we didn't feel we missed anything. We were often surrounded by tours and gained more information from our book than the guide was sharing with his group. You never know how reliable a guide really is, and with this book, you can be assured of Amanda Claridge's credentials. The trip became a bit of a mystery adventure for us as we excitedly reconstructed the ruins around us into the elegant structures they once were.

Even if you do decide to go with a more mainstream guide book for your trip to Rome, you will find this one to be an invaluable supplement for all those tidbits that the major guides just don't have time to cover.

My Favorite Piano Book
By qwerty3
I heard someone playing Nuvole Bianche on You Tube and had to have this sheet music. I only took 3 years of piano lessons as a child, making it through Michael Aaron Grade 4. I have recently taken up playing again and have struggled with classical and Scott Joplin ragtime, both of which I like but find difficult. I am not a great sight reader, but I was able to sit down and play these songs right away without many mistakes. The music is simple and repetitive, but in a good way, like listening to a stream or rainfall.

There aren't a whole lot of ledger notes nor a bunch of notes being played at one time, and the rhythm is not complicated, yet the music makes you sound like a better piano player than you really are. I own a stack of sheet music about a foot tall, but this is my very favorite. It is different than any other music I have, very emotionally expressive. Too bad it is bound like a regular paperback book and does not lie flat. Since the pieces are long, that makes it very difficult to turn pages.

Pleasant but a bit ponderous
By Phil in MIdland
I enjoyed listening to some of these tunes, but after playing some of them, I realize they are rather repetitive and a bit simple, musically. I also question the transcription of one of the tunes, that seems to have the wrong meter.

love this collection
By Alan
I am returning to the piano as an adult and came across Einaudi's music. It is meditative and fun to play. The music, is minimal, simple, yet elegant and sophisticated sounding. I am a beginner-intermediate and this book has really helped improve my playing. I have several of his music books at this point, and this collection remains my favorite to play.

Remembering (Korea: 1950-1953)
By Dennis J. Ottley

Remembering (Korea: 1950-1953) is the author’s memoir. This book describes his involvement in Korea during the Korean War and points out the reasoning behind the conflict.

Over the years, the Korean War has been considered “The Forgotten War” by many. At one time, President Harry S. Truman referred to it as a “Police Action,” but 5,720,000 Americans who served in Korean have never forgotten what it was about and that it was much more than just a “Police Action.” They understand that it was an all-out war, and one of the bloodiest in American history. It involved over 20 countries of the United Nations that joined with the United States to save the South Koreans from annihilation and the tyranny of the communist countries, such as Russia and North Korea.

On July 27, 1953, an armistice was signed and today South Korea remains as a free nation and one of the strongest and wealthiest countries in Asia. This book is to help Americans understand what the war was all about and describe one soldier’s experience and opinion of the conflict.

About the Author

Dennis J Ottley was born on January 28, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He lived in many different towns throughout his childhood, but his family finally settled in Evanston, Wyoming. He quit high school at the start of his senior year and joined the 141st Tank Battalion of the Wyoming National Guard. About the same time he met a girl who he became very serious about and married on July 26, 1950.

When the Korean War started, Dennis’ guard unit was activated in September of 1950. In July 1951 Dennis was selected for overseas duty and was sent to Korea to help form a new tank company. After serving almost ten months in Korea as a tank gunner and tank commander, he was discharged on May 29, 1952.

Upon arriving home in Evanston, he immediately went back to work to make a new life for himself and his family. After a few years he became highly involved in his community and ended up serving three 4-year terms as a member of the Evanston City Council and three 4-year terms as Mayor.

Dennis was in business for himself most of his adult life and retired from his real estate agency at the end of 2013 at the age of 81. After raising four sons and 64 years of marriage, he and his wife Sandy still live in Evanston.

Why Europe?: The Medieval Origins of Its Special Path, by Michael Mitterauer

Why did capitalism and colonialism arise in Europe and not elsewhere? Why were parliamentarian and democratic forms of government founded there? What factors led to Europe’s unique position in shaping the world? Thoroughly researched and persuasively argued, Why Europe? tackles these classic questions with illuminating results.

Michael Mitterauer traces the roots of Europe’s singularity to the medieval era, specifically to developments in agriculture. While most historians have located the beginning of Europe’s special path in the rise of state power in the modern era, Mitterauer establishes its origins in rye and oats. These new crops played a decisive role in remaking the European family, he contends, spurring the rise of individualism and softening the constraints of patriarchy. Mitterauer reaches these conclusions by comparing Europe with other cultures, especially China and the Islamic world, while surveying the most important characteristics of European society as they took shape from the decline of the Roman empire to the invention of the printing press. Along the way, Why Europe? offers up a dazzling series of novel hypotheses to explain the unique evolution of European culture.

Detailed, informative, broad.

I'm almost done reading this book and I'm glad that I bought it. Many other authors would have come up with a single theory for Europe's path through history. Mitterauer instead presents multiple interlocking theories, each of which contributes to Europe's particular path. He really understands the material and sees the connections between the different strands and his clear writing means that you will understand the connections as well.

but if you would like some mental meat to chew on Why Europe
By Richard B.
A scholarly approach that is difficult to read. On the other hand a very interesting thesis to explain the rise of industrial technology only in western Europe, and not elsewhere, largely based on the cultivation of rye and oats, which lead to the keeping of draft animals, which in turn led to improved plows, carts and wagons, and thence to Iron and so on I find I must read in small bits and think about it.
If you are looking for a thrill-read, this is not it, but if you would like some mental meat to chew on Why Europe? is hard to beat.

An interesting book
By A reader
This book caught my attention while I was researching the development of capitalism and the era of various bourgeois revolutions. I had become unnerved by the laxness of attention to detail that seems to pervade histories of the Early Modern period. The problem of rooting the key period of Europe's social development in that era seemed to open up more questions than answers. Those questions only increased as I began reading medievalist histories of Europe, invention, science, and commerce sprang forth in the High Middle Ages with a verve that wouldn't be matched until the 17th century. European colonialism was well underway before Columbus ever crossed the Atlantic, as Western Europeans expanded into Eastern Europe, the Levant, the Mediterranean and Northern Africa (especially the islands off its coast). The two most capitalist societies in early modern Europe, England and the Netherlands, also developed clear capitalist social relations in land tenure (the former especially so) in the 14-5th centuries. So rich yeoman and aristocrats were already enclosing and starting to pursue profit-based agriculture in England BEFORE Christopher Columbus had released his cruelty on the American world. Revolutions shook the medieval world with the a force that would not be seen until the 17th-20th centuries. The 1381 rising in England was easily as radical (if not more so) than the initial French Revolution of 1789. And the rebels of the Jacquerie and Hussite rebellions could've taught most of Cromwell's parliamentarians what class struggle really looks like. The medieval revolution is unfortunately not a subject Mitterauer really explores.

Although Mitterauer acknowledges that capitalism arose in Europe first, he does not provide for the reader an in-depth explanation of what capitalism is, how it was formed and why it took root in Europe. The most provocative point he makes on that issue is his analysis of European mining as the KEY capitalist industry in Europe as well as Europe's indisputable dominance in mining. With the heavy utilization of water-power and mechanization, no industry so closely resembled the steam age factory as mining. Firms such as the Fugger-Thurzo company were exceedingly well organized and had involved massive concentrations of capital. Large concentrations of labor and equipment (colloquially called capital) is the nature of mining, but Mitterauer makes an important connection regarding European agriculture's heavy dependence on iron tools creating great demand for iron and other metals. Whether European mining was truly capitalist (rather than being simple commerce) or whether the miners were true proletarians is obviously debatable (Mitterauer argues they were generally impoverished wage workers rather than artisans) but the thesis is different from the usual focus on textiles.

The strongest case he makes for a capitalist transformation in the middle ages lies in his analysis of various possessions seized in the crusades. For instance the first slave-based sugar plantations, a harbinger for the age of Caribbean prison islands populated by slaves took hold in the middle ages. Mitterauer ties the colonialism of medieval Italian city-states with the commune movements of the middle ages. He makes an interesting connection between free republican Pisa, which was a result of the medieval commune movement and her exploitation of Mediterranean islands like Elba and Sardinia. As a famous saying among merchants went: "Citizens in Pisa, Kings in Sardinia" as Elba provided 40% of Pisa's income its hard not to read its republican freedom as a kind of social-imperialism practiced on the part of the city-state. The author rightly points out that the Portuguese colonization of Africa beginning in 1415 was the first great act of European expansionism in global trade, he interestingly characterizes the Adiz dynasty as "crowned capitalists" (a similar remark has been made about England's Edward IV).

Another oddity is the fact that the most bellicose crusader popes were often considered "reformers" the costs of such reform seemed to become more tolerable with the prospect of colonial rewards to offset the costs. Another nasty side of Catholic "reform" was the use of crusades within Europe (and against fellow christian nations) against all manner of dissidents and rebels, the nasty Albigensian crusade in Southern France or the crusading armies that poured in from all over Europe to fight the Hussites, are a grim reminder of the role the crusades played in the formation of Europe's "persecuting society". I suspect that such "reform" hindered progress almost as much as it must've aided it.

Rather than seeing individualism as being primary to European development, the author correctly notes that communalism and struggles over different definitions of 'community' was everywhere. The chartered towns and urban communes and their movements was one style of communalism. In the countryside the communalism of estate, which grew out of roman slave plantations and military camps and its politics also predominated. In religion, Europe undoubtedly had the most highly organized (and highly disciplined) religious community in the world. The struggle for the common man of the medieval age as he saw it, must've undoubtedly been to take control of his/her communal religious life, his rural community, his commune. However, that does not mean he was a free-wheeling liberal, although his struggle and political language would later come to define modern liberalism as Rodney Hilton pointed out. It is difficult to view a society where lords had peasant children sent out of the home and away from their parents to work on their estates, for the simple reason that they preferred peasant households to have two generations instead of three as fundamentally individualist. Lords had significant power over who peasants could marry, what age they could marry, when they could take control of their meager plots and even assumed the roll of godparent to the children of vassals. The power lords wielded lessened the power of the individual father as well as the role of clanship and extended family but it must've came at a cost to the freedom of peasants. The system of patriarchy was more flexible and loose ties also encouraged social opportunity. The reader will probably find Mitterauer's description of West European family life scarily familiar i.e. a couple marries in their late twenties when they are financially secure and can keep their own house, two generations usually live within it, with grandparents either retiring or children pressured to move out. In spite of the sexual and feminists revolutions of the 20th century the basic structure is not far from what we have now-- in fact the importance of the couple as a social unit in stabilizing society, like today, outranked the social dominance of the father.

The most contestable point made by the author is his view that parliamentary democracy is the most essential and unique aspect of European civilization. Whatever we mean by "democracy" the fact is that democracy didn't exist for the vast majority of people and probably wouldn't exist until the 20th century. Capitalism gave the West 500 years of dominance, whereas mass democracy was fought every step of the way by European rulers. The correlation between capitalism and democracy is tenuous but real, not real enough to sustain the view 2,000 years of off-and-on again parliamentarianism for various ruling elites is the most important fact of European history. Nevertheless, this book contains a great wealth of information, only problem is that it doesn't really safeguard itself against the danger of a new eurocentrism that the author points out in the preview.
