About the Author

NANCY GUTHRIE teaches the Bible at conferences around the country and is currently pursuing graduate studies at Covenant Theological Seminary. Her first book in the Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament series is The Promised One, a study of Genesis.

Jesus Only Wise - Jesus in the Wisdom Literature

One of the most exciting things about living in the times in which we are living is the anticipation of the return of Christ and the ushering in of His kingdom. Along with this prophetic reality is the intensification of our study of God's Word to look for Christ from Genesis to Revelation. According to the author this study is "uniquely designed to help you look into the wonder of the wisdom literature of the Old Testament (covering 10 weeks of studies in Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon) and see how it prepares us for and points us toward Christ.

This book will help you:

(1) Learn how to study the Bible inductively (each chapter contains questions for personal Bible study);

(2) Understand the Bible and how the different books of the Bible fit together as a whole (each lesson contains a teaching chapter on the core truths of the Biblical Book being studied);

(3) Interact with the central truths of each Wisdom Literature Book and how they relate to the whole Bible (each chapter has a discussion starter and a dozen or so questions of exposition based on the passage of study;

(4) Apply the relevant applications from each passage in your life (each chapter has one or more questions to put the passage into action in one's life);

(5) Love and worship Jesus Christ (each lesson is loaded with cross references, charts, discussion, and a "Looking Forward" section highlighting Jesus as the central figure, hero, and theme of each passage of study and of the entire Scriptures).

I don't know of a small group study guide out there today that has more depth, more of Jesus, is more fun to study and discuss than this new study by Nancy Guthrie. It is simply outstanding in its depth of Biblical exposition, helpful in its applications, and highlights the fact that Jesus is what the Bible and life is all about. It's about time that someone has put together a series of books designed for serious lay people about, by, and for Christ at the center of all of the Scriptures. If you are looking for a phenomenal Bible study that is theologically deep, practically relevant, and will help you to worship and love Jesus more than ever then this is the Bible study for you!

Relevant, Practical, and Christ-centered.

I often wonder what it would have been like to be on Emmaus Road with Jesus after his resurrection. While two men were walking and talking together, Jesus just showed up. He began to talk to them, and Luke eventually ended up saying, "And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself." Jesus is exegeting the Old Testament, and the interpretive key is Himself. What did He say to them? Where can we find Jesus in the Old Testament? These are questions that I ask myself. Thankfully, these are questions that Nancy Guthrie has not only asked but also spent time studying. The fruit of this study is her Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament Bible Studies. The Wisdom of God: Seeing Jesus in the Psalms and Wisdom Books is her second book in the series. In this edition, Guthrie takes the readers through the books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.

How the book is formatted

The book itself is intended to be a 10 week Bible study that can be used in personal or group settings. Each week, Guthrie invites the reader into a time of personal Bible study, a teaching chapter, a looking forward segment and finally a discussion guide. I enjoyed this format. In the personal Bible study section, Guthrie usually introduced the reader to the genre of the book along with some key themes and passages. This section is very interactive and really sets up the remaining sections to come. In the teaching section, Guthrie provides insight in a practical and Christ-centered way. I can remember numerous times reading the teaching on Job, Psalms, or Proverbs and asking myself how I never saw that before. At the end of the teaching section is the looking forward section. In this section, Guthrie leads the reader in a short reflection showing how the ideas in that chapter point forward to Christ. Lastly, the discussion guide helps further examine the teaching as well as apply it. There is also a "Getting How It Fits into the Big Picture" question. I really enjoyed thinking through this question. It encourages the reader to think through how the teaching in Proverbs fits in with the larger redemptive story line of Scripture. The format of this study is great.

A couple of things I really enjoyed

I deeply enjoyed the aim of this book. Nancy Writes, "Over the coming weeks, as we make our way through the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament, we'll not only find wise principles for living life in this world as one who belongs to God but we'll also see the wise person these books point to, the wisest person who ever lived, hidden in its drama and poetry and proverb and song" (pg. 24). Seriously, that statement alone gets me excited to dive into the Wisdom of literature. It is easy for me to look for wise principles while reading the Wisdom literature without ever slowing down to look for the wisdom of God, namely Jesus. I can imagine that this task was no easy one. Thus, I love that Guthrie undertook and, in my opinion, fulfilled this approach and aim.

The teaching in the book is great. It is relevant, practical and Christ-centered. Not only is Christ displayed in each book, but also the heart of the book itself is not neglected. What I mean is, the main theme of Ecclesiastes is not dismissed so that she can show you Jesus. No, Guthrie takes you to the heart of Ecclesiastes and shows you how Jesus is the one who brings it all together or makes sense of it all. I was thankful to not only learn more about Jesus, but to learn more about the themes and literature of the wisdom books. Bible studies can be extremely difficult to craft in a way were they remain both theologically faithful and applicable to life. There is a tendency to over emphasize one or the other. Yet, Nancy was able combine a practical and relevant approach while remaining Christo-centric.

Perhaps the greatest compliment that I can give to this book is the passion that it stirred up in me for the Old Testament. I know that the Old Testament is able to make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 3:15). However, it seems so difficult to see this sometimes. Thus, I am thankful for the passion ignited by this book to search the Old Testament in a relevant, applicable, and Christ-centered way. Nancy Guthrie's passion has certainly helped fuel my passion for the Old Testament and the Wisdom Literature.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to learn more about Christ from the Old Testament. Whether you are male or female, in a group or alone, you will profit from reading this book. You will not only find "wise principles", you will also see "the wise person." This book/Bible study is excellent.

Wonderful

This is the 4th Nancy Guthrie book I've read. Actually, I am not just "reading" this book. It is the basis for my daily Bible Study. I was part of a group using her other books and liked them so much, I decided to use this one for my personal Bible study. I am overwhelmed by the work Nancy put into this book through research, study, inspiration and guidance by the Holy Spirit. Since God is revealed in scripture, I am meeting God in a deeper way each day as I go through the study. Thank you Nancy!

The M41 Walker Bulldog was a U.S. light tank developed to replace the M24 Chaffee. While the M24 Chaffee was a successful design, its main gun was not effective enough against well armored opposition. Although the primary mission of a light tank was scouting, the U.S. Army wanted one with more powerful armament. The development of the new tank, T37, began in 1947. The vehicle was designed to be air-transportable, and the desired anti-tank capabilities were provided by installing a long 76-mm gun with an advanced rangefinder. In 1949, with the adoption of a less ambitious rangefinder, the project's designation was changed to T41. Production started in 1951 at Cadillac's Cleveland Tank Plant, and by 1953 the tank replaced the M24 in the United States Army. Initially the M41 was nicknamed "Little Bulldog", then renamed "Walker Bulldog" after General Walton Walker, who was killed in a jeep accident in Korea in 1950. The Walker Bulldog saw limited combat with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, but for the most part, the conflict served as a testing ground to work out the tank's rangefinder. In 1954, the M41A1 variant was produced with a hydraulic turret traverse instead of an electrical one. The more compact system allowed for increased ammunition. Created in 1956, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M41 and M41A1’s design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details the sighting equipment, crew formations, firing duties and more. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Army FM for M41 Bulldog

This is an Army Field Manual for the M41 Bulldog. It is no longer in service, so the manual is really useless to the average person looking for a coffee table book about tanks - unless you happen to be a tank buff and enjoy looking at the typical military instruction manual given to the crews of the M41.

Make no mistake. This is not a history book about the M41, it is a paperback repro of the original FM. If you understand what that means, you will not be disappointed with this purchase.

A tool for success

If a mechanical engineer has chosen a career in the world of electronics, I strongly recommend this easy to follow gold mine of a book. I say it is a gold mine because it applies directly to the engineers' job. There are no fluff chapters or topics. Everything applies. Steinberg has made it easy (and almost fun) to solve those every day shock, vibration and acoustic challenges. Finding the natural frequency of a body such as a PC board is so much simpler for me now. And a surprising tidbit was for me to discover some amazing facts concerning acoustics. This is especially important as applied to fan cooled electronic packages. Another important area of study was packaging for transportation. How many times have we simply said "Just pack it in foam"? Before reading this book, I couldn't be sure what foam density to use or what the optimum thickness was. Why guess? Do it right.
I borrowed this book from my employer, took it home and read it over the long Christmas weekend. I was so impressed, that I am purchasing my personal copy tonight. I won't be without it.

Application beyond just electronics

The author is obviously an engineer who understands the everyday practical problems a dynamicist faces. Some theory, but chock full of easy to understand, and more importantly, *useful* information necessary to put properly designed product out the door.
Don't let the title fool you. The focus of this book is electronics, but the material here is applicable to any vibration problem.
If you're doing any dynamics work, you NEED this book.

We believe that the best pedagogical approach is to use a currently popular, powerful, yet easy-to-understand microprocessor chip as the vehicle for teaching these concepts. We also believe that since 8-bit microprocessors are simple and easy to understand, this makes them an appropriate choice for an introductory textbook. As such, we have chosen to use the 68HC11 microprocessor as that vehicle. The 68HC11 is one of the most powerful and flexible 8-bit microprocessors in general use, and it contains all of the elements and features that need to be part of an introduction to microprocessors and microprocessor applications. Everything the reader learns and understands using this representative device can be readily transferred to other microprocessors and applications, including the more complex 16-bit and 32-bit devices.

This sixth edition retains all of the valuable learning aids of the previous editions, including (1) extensive use of clearly explained illustrative examples to provide immediate reinforcement; (2) clear, uncluttered diagrams to enhance the understanding of the written material; (3) liberal use of flowcharts; (4) extensive coverage of material on troubleshooting digital systems, internal and external IC faults, and test equipment used to troubleshoot digital systems; (5) several Troubleshooting Case Studies covering 1/O interfacing circuits and RAM decoding logic in a 68HC 11-based circuit; (6) glossaries of important terms at the end of each chapter for easy review of chapter contents; (7) over 470 end-of-chapter questions and problems of varied complexity; (8) a comprehensive index with certain page numbers in boldface type to indicate end-of-chapter glossary definitions; and (9) an extensive appendix containing a detailed description of each of the 68HC 11's available instructions as well as a complete Op-Code vs. Instruction Cross Reference.

The major enhancements to this edition are the inclusion of material on floating point numbers and the use of additional pictures, illustrations, and exercises its the explanation of certain concepts. This includes the following:

  • Chapters 7-9. Use of the industry standard of one instruction per line when writing assembly language programs.
  • Chapter 7. Inclusion of illustrative aids and step-by-step analysis to explain several addressing modes of the 68HC 11 microcontroller.
  • All Chapters. Significant increase in the number of end-of-chapter questions, problems, and troubleshooting exercises.
  • Expansion of Appendix A to include the reference list and the Opcode Maps for all of the 68HC 11 MCU Instruction Types.

About the Author
Larry Elterman was born in Boston Massachusetts and grew up in the Boston area. He attended the University of Massachusetts and graduated with a combined degree in mathematics and computer science. As an adult he was a software engineer and lived the typical American baby boomer yuppie life style. That is, until he decided to start a new life, a new adventure – in the Philippines.

"A Man's Guide to...." is the indespensible guide

I am recently retired and widowed and started planning to visit the Philippines in Fall, 2009. Like the first reviewer in this section I bought four books on the Philippines: a good guide book (Lonely Planet); Culture Shock, by A. Roces; A Long Way to Go for a Date; and Elterman's singularly unique guide book. I agree with Howp's views on the first three. But I am even more bullish on Elterman's book than Howp was...and I have now been in the Philippines for 6 weeks of a 12 week stay. I have three goals in being here. I want a warm place to winter every year, Jan to May; a good place for diving, snorkeling and sailing; and, hopefully to find a long term partner or wife. Any good guide book will get you around in the Philippines because the people are very friendly and helpful and most speak English. But Eltermans's book is indispensible. It contains practical information on almost every important aspect for someone with interests similar to mine. I am pretty tech savy but I found the section on cell phones and texting saved me time and frustration. And his explanation of the importance of texting and how to use it is helpful for anyone of any age wanting to meet and date Filipinas. Other sections on housing,transportation, getting an extended visa are also useful, going beyond a standard guidebook.

But the book's really strong suit is providing information on how to meet and date Filipina women. Elterman creates a typology of types of Filipina women who may be willing to date foreigners that has helped me manage a confusing situation. And he managed to do so while describing Filipino people in a positive and respectful manner which they certainly deserve. Any typology is just that, an abstraction and all real people are more complex than any description. But the guide provides rich and accurate description (in my limited experience) and subtle suggestions that are helpful to any foreigner who is seeking to date a Filipina or find a wife or companion regardless of age or how long they have been here. And Elterman does so in a fun and readable manner. I find myself consulting this unique book on a weekly basis.

This book is full of valuable advice, definitely worth the money!
Reading was enjoyable, I started it and didn't put it down until the end
I am married to a Filipina for 25 years in Australia, and have visited the Philippines many times
Still, I laerned a thing or two from the book!
The only negative aspect are frequent spelling mistakes (get a better proof reader, Larry!)

Imperfect but very good

Some information in this book is not 100% correct, but I think it is an excellent effort and a very useful book. The main error I recall is that the author says a fiancee visa gives you 6 months to get to know your prospective spouse... in reality the time period is 90 days and the U.S. government specifically says that it is NOT supposed to be an introductory period but rather the final checks and arrangements on somebody you are already committed to marrying. It is a bit hard to understand how the author missed the mark like that on something so very central to what this book is about.

Also I wonder if the author hasn't been doing some rationalizing or wishful thinking on the subject of how completely accepted the young Filipina/old American relationship is in the Philippines. I was just over there and saw the 19/55 combinations and I was told they are viewed with a mixture of pity and displeasure... and the topic of considerable gossip. Well, maybe the person telling me that had motives to do so... I don't know.

One thing the author didn't hit was the subject of tipping. I have 3 books on the Philippines so far and none clearly state what the normal custom is there. I mean I'm sure they are happy to take my money, but do Filipinos usually tip at restaurants, and how much?

Another thing the book should have covered is diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. All the travel books and the U.S. government recommend drugs to protect from malaria for tourists, but I'm sure the native people are not taking any such drugs. What is the consensus among expats living in the country? Surely the expense and side effects of the drugs make it nearly impossible for long-term residents to continue taking them. A little insight here would have been really nice.

But overall I liked the book. The author comes across as a fairly decent person, and the book seems packed with useful information and good advice. I felt it was like having a long chat with a very knowledgeable yet regular guy.
