There is no more complete review of the finite element method. Furthermore, all notation is written in matrix from without any hard to read diadics. Every section gives explicitly, the implementation of the procedure discussed so there's no guess work required.

Excellent book for starters in the field

This is the ideal book for beginners in finite elements, though the approach is slightly more theoretical. If you have a good background in linear algebra and are comfortable with matrices etc, you should have no trouble finishing this one. You can aim at the definitive work by Professor Bathe after finishing this one.

deep ecology

Where to start? Maybe by saying thank you, Thay.

Thich Nhat Hanh realizes that we can't mitigate our ecological predicament with more technology, or by buying stuff no matter how "green." Instead, we need to fundamentally change the way we relate to ourselves, to each other, and to the Earth. We must come home to the Earth. It is time to realize that not only are we in nature all the time, we are nature. There is no separation between us and the Earth. The Earth made us from herself over billions of years, and sustains us every day with food, water, and air.

The way to realize this connection is through mindfulness. Mindfulness is "a nonjudgmental awareness of all that is happening inside us and around us." Mindfulness means being wholly present with whoever you're with, or whatever you're doing. Not planning for the future, or rolling in the past, or wanting something you don't have. Mindfulness is cultivated by simply observing the breath and the body, both during meditation and during every daily task. In this way we begin to realize that everything we need to be happy is right here. We begin to realize that everything is transient, and transforms from one form to another. When we take this simple and concrete action, not only do we we gradually bring our lives into alignment with the needs of the Earth, we become happier.

Thich Nhat Hanh's writing, as always, is so simple, and full of compassion and insight. For example: "A bodhisattva is a living being who has happiness, awakening, understanding, and love.... Anyone who cultivates love and offers a lot of happiness to others is a bodhisattva. When we look at our planet, we know that the Earth is the most beautiful bodhisattva of all. Don't search for a bodhisattva in your imagination. The bodhisattva you are looking for is right at your feet."

I take refuge in the Earth.

I've read some of Thich Nhat Hahn's other books, and this one is the most "cosmic." He dips frequently into astrophysics, which makes sense when considering the conditions for the arising and interbeing of Earth. In an afterword, he urges humanity to put down blind religion with its dualities and discrimination, and replace it with "a cosmic religion based not on myth, belief, or dogma, but on evidence and the insight of interbeing." Start with the breath.

Like Joanna Macy's book 'Active Hope', this is an essential text for any activist or student of ecology who seeks to find a way to look clearly at the damage we've done and the peril we're in, without giving way to despair. It seems to me that books like this one may provide an essential balance. Otherwise we risk being transfixed by disaster, both ongoing and imminent.

If we have a chance of survival -- real survival, as a culture and not just as a few remnants of human scavengers focused on brute survival - we must transform our thinking in the most fundamental ways, clear down to the optical illusion of separateness, the delusion that we are separate from each other and the Earth. What we must do will simply not be possible if we continue to see the Earth as "our environment", as something "out there". As Thich Nhat Hanh writes, "The Earth is not just the environment we live in. We are the Earth and we are always carrying her within us."

I am fed up with the way most spiritual books avert from their eyes from catastrophe. It seems to me that many so-called spiritual books are primarily interested in pulling the blinds and cranking the air conditioning. They are like delightful little packets of bubble soap: something in which to soak while awaiting the end of the Earth.
Thich Nhat Hanh "gets it". He sees what we've done and what we go on doing. He sees the full extent of the harm and the danger - and he shows that it is possible to see all of this and remain not only able to act, but even able to experience joy. Peace and happiness remain possible - even in full view of the situation and the possibilities. That's stunning.

In this book he emphasizes our primary relationship with our original womb, Mother Earth. For Thich, this relationship is critical given the overwhelming scientific evidence of the negative human impact upon the earth's atmosphere and natural sources of life. Thich brings a moral and ethic worldview that is sadly lacking in many major religions.

Published in the fall of 2009 as a primary source for candidates of the Chartered Alternative Investments Analyst (CAIA) program, this volume is in fact a composite of four distinct sections, namely:
I Venture Capital and Private Equity
II Commodities and Managed Futures
III Real Estate
IV Hedge Funds

Each section was written by authors who are experienced specialists or researchers in their field, and can be read/studied independently of the rest.

Overall, the text is a substantial, detailed and very readable body of essential knowledge for professionals in the fields of investments and finance. Key concepts, terminology, descriptions of investment instruments and vehicles, as well as applications in a portfolio construction and risk management context are clearly, systematically described - although CAIA candidates would probably wish for more lists, bullet points and summary boxes, along with many more worked examples.

The most negative point about this edition is the errata - all readers should check the CAIA website (both the Study Guide for the Level II exam and the sheet of subsequently found Errata where applicable) at [...] to flag the corrections before starting to read the book.

About the Author

Kelly Anderson's documentaries include My Brooklyn (2012) and Every Mother’s Son (2004, with Tami Gold). Her work has been screened on the PBS series POV and on HBO, and she was nominated for a national Emmy Award. She is a Professor in the Department of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College, City University of New York.

Martin Lucas is a documentary filmmaker and educator with over 30 years of experience making and speaking about documentary worldwide. His most recent film, Hiroshima Bound (2015), is a personal exploration of coming to terms with the Atomic Bomb. He teaches�in the Department of Film and Media Studies at�Hunter College, City University of New York.

Mick Hurbis-Cherrier teaches film production and screenwriting at Hunter College,�City University of New York. Professionally, he has worked as a screenwriter, director, cinematographer, and editor. He is the author of Voice & Vision: A Creative Approach to Narrative Film and DV Production 2nd ed. (Focal Press) and the coauthor of Directing: Film Techniques and Aesthetics, 5th ed. (Focal Press) (with Michael Rabiger).

In each chapter, the techniques related to these mathematical and numerical subjects are applied to a wide variety of financial products. This is a textbook for graduate students following a mathematical finance program as well as a valuable reference for those researchers working in numerical methods in financial derivatives. For this new edition, the book has been updated throughout with many new problems added. More details about numerical methods for some options, for example, Asian options with discrete sampling, are provided and the proof of solution-uniqueness of derivative security problems and the complete stability analysis of numerical methods for two-dimensional problems are added.��

I use this book for my High School students. My district does not provide this teacher's edition book. They do provide me of a student's edition, so therefore, I must do all the answers to even questions. I would gladly paid $10 for this book so I don't have to do the even problems.

A lot of fire and good exegetical summaries throughout

A review on Oliver B. Greene's Commentary on 1 Corinthians. It is available used. Just look around for it.

This commentary captures the essence of the text in most places, although his older views of some of the controversial passages of 1 Corinthians do not hold up under scrutiny, his general work throughout this commentary is highly edifying and worth consulting. He has a vim and vigor that other commentaries usually lack. Just for this alone it's worth reading. Greene gives over 500 pages of commentary on 1 Corinthians! His general focus is exegetical and application.

Let me illustrate what I see as the chief value of this commentary:

On 1 Corinthians 2 he writes about verse 1 "Paul reminds the Corinthian believers that Christian Revelation owes nothing to human wisdom".

He then goes on to talk about Paul's Damascus road experience and his educational background. He discusses the term mystery in the scriptures giving us a page or two for every verse. He constantly applies points to our lives today in a practical way.

I used to listen to this author's radio broadcasts many many years ago. His writing reads just like his radio talks went. If you ever listened to him, you will love his commentaries. You can almost hear his raspy voice with great conviction preaching as he writes. It's quite a refreshing break from the more technical commentaries in my library!

He is incorrect on a number of issues in this commentary, but that does not negate his overall contribution to us all throughout this work.
