From the Back Cover
A book which throws light on many features of the American character. Its concern is not merely to portray the scorners of intellect in American life, but to say something about what the intellectual is, and can be, as a force in a democratic society.

Sadly relevant in today's United States
By DoctorD
Written in the wake of 1950s McCarthyism, Hofstadter's outline of the status of the "intellectual" in American society is not perfect, yet still worth reading. He starts the book with several 1950s-era quotations in which the intellectual, and the idea of learning for its own sake, is criticized. He then identifies four main areas responsible for American anti-intellectualism: religion; politics; business; and elementary education. These areas are then explored in detail. The historical development of these aspects of American society is fascinating and not familiar to most people.

The major weakness of his argument concerns cause and effect. Although each section is full of examples in which excessive education is criticized, Hofstadter does not convincingly explain why American society gravitated towards simplistic and anti-intellectual tendencies. For example, the rise of evangelistic religions in which excessive academic training is seen as a hindrance to salvation is presented as a factor that contributed to anti-intellectualism. Shouldn't the real question be why Americans gravitated to evangelism rather than to faiths which required more formal training of their ministers? Not until the section on business does Hofstadter propose that the economic success of immigrants who previously belonged to the lower (and uneducated) classes was critical to the success of anti-intellectualism.

50 years after its publication, it is easy to see that Hofstadter's optimism that anti-intellectualism had died out was premature. And sadly, the one area that Hofstadter had never seen evidence of anti-intellectualism, namely knowledge of the physical sciences, has now become a key battleground in American politics with the current doubt of climate change.

A Definitive History of the Intellectual Culture of America
By The Cat-Tribe
Professor Hofstadter sets the standard for the dissection of many facets of U.S. history. Here he tells the tale of the intertwining factors of American culture and politics that lead to prevalent anti-intellectualism. Although published in 1963, this remains the definitive work on the distrust of elites and experts and is sadly relevant to the present day. Hofstadter writes with a storyteller's style that does not skip or gloss over details but invites the reader to enjoy the experience of learning. He also often displays a wry sense of humor. If you want to understand why those most qualified to address issues -- whether they be foreign policy, law, running government, social sciences, etc. -- are often considered suspect sources of information while talking heads with no knowledge but loud voices are embraced, this book explains the framework for that culture. Personally, I found the writing so smooth and the subject so engrossing I could hardly take breaks between devouring the book.

Hofstadter combines both painstaking detail and sweeping themes. I cannot imagine even the most learned people not learning new details about American history and the forces that have shaped our nation. Hofstadter's analysis is very persuasive -- analytical but with passion and new insights. Even events or people from American history that one knows about, one will be shown new perspectives. For example, one might not have considered how American democratic principles can encourage anti-intellectualism. Or how our economic system and intelligentsia themselves can sometimes encourage expertise and other times discourage it. It shouldn't need to be said that a Pulitzer Prize winning book is a must read, but I'll say it anyway.

One of the most important books I've ever read - can't praise it highly enough
By Michael Huggins
First, let me say what this book is not. It's not a book that can be understood only by deep and brilliant minds. The style is clear and readable, and anyone who can read and understand a newspaper editorial can understand what is said here. It's not a peevish rant about how everyone below a certain IQ level, or everyone of a certain political persuasion, or everyone who goes to church, must be mentally dull. The author goes out of his way to be fair and even-handed to all points of view, perhaps especially those with which he doesn't agree.

Finally, even though it was published when John F. Kennedy was President, it is decidedly not out of date. In fact, anyone reading it will be amazed how the problems described here, from 50, 150, or even 200 years ago, may still crop up today.

What is an intellectual? It is not necessarily someone with a genius-level IQ, or someone who speaks 5 languages, or even necessarily someone who discovers a new theory in physics.

An intellectual is simply someone who takes the same pleasure in the exercise of his or her mind, in exploring ideas, as healthy and physically fit people do when they're out throwing a Frisbee or playing touch football. The pleasure is in the activity itself.

Imagine a small child trying to see how many blocks she can stack up on top of each other before they fall. On the one hand, the child is playing--that is, doing something for no reason but that she enjoys it. On the other hand, she is perfectly serious and focused on her goal. If the stack of blocks falls down, she simply tries again.

The intellectual is the person who shows this combination of play and seriousness towards ideas. To use the analogy of blocks again, the intellectual takes each block and turns it over to look at it from all sides, stacks the blocks up, arranges them in various shapes, and so forth.

Of course this activity can have a serious purpose--e.g., thinking through the ethics of cloning--but to be a specifically intellectual pursuit, it must be done out of the love of the activity itself.

America has often had a love-hate relationship with intellectualism, and still does today. Ironically, one of the ages that prized the intellect most was the Puritan era, because Puritans valued a learned ministry; after all, it was they who founded Harvard. Later, many of the Founding Fathers, such as Jefferson and Franklin, had wide intellectual interests, from philosophy, to science and the arts. Up to the middle of the 19th century, even many businessmen were cultured and well-educated--indeed, the goal of that day was to make one's fortune in trade and then retire at a relatively early age to a life of culture and philanthropy.

Despite these notable periods of favor for the intellectual, it is equally true that something about American civilization has often worked against intellectualism. Part of it was that America, which began as pioneer settlements, always had to be very practical. Another aspect was the idea that cultured and educated elites were undemocratic--resentment of "the elites" didn't begin with today's Tea Party but was always an undercurrent of American life. A third aspect was that Americans tended to see the past as something dark and backward to be improved upon and then abandoned by American know-how and self-reliance.

In politics, the Jeffersonian philosopher type went out with the age of Andrew Jackson. For the rest of the 19th century, intellectuals were mostly ineffectual reform types, criticizing from the sidelines, in magazine articles; they were not consulted in public life again until the turn of the 20th century. Their favor was high during the age of Wilson, perhaps even higher with Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Brain Trust," only to come under suspicion once more during the McCarthy era of the early 1950s.

In business, the shift from trade to railroad building and, later, manufacturing, left the businessman less leisure for intellectual pursuits, nor was he particularly interested in having men work for him who were preoccupied with theory and speculation--enough education to read, write, and handle business math was satisfactory. In religion, the scholarly minister was replaced by the barely literate circuit rider, who rode the mountains and forests for miles to preach in log cabins to backwoods settlers. Later, it was felt that too much education might undermine religious faith, and we had the spectacle of the Scopes trial. Meanwhile, practical businessmen of that day didn't care to know about theological ideas so much as the idea of religion as a "power source" that could be turned on at will.

Even literature and the arts suffered. America, unlike Europe, had no ruins of the Parthenon or medieval castles, nor did it have the same traditions of civilization. Artists and writers could certainly portray what they found here and did, but there was still a tension between merely celebrating this new land and achieving the critical distance with which the intellectual examines everything.

Even education itself was not without its challenges. If you think that "the good old days" of education, when every child had 3 years of foreign language, 3 years of math, 3 years of science, and 2 years of U.S. history, lasted continuously until a couple of decades ago, read chapters 13 and 14 of this book, and they will startle you. In the name of progressive educational theories, traditional education underwent such radical changes beginning in 1910, culminating in the "life adjustment" movement of the 1940s and 1950s, that the U.S. Navy found that many of its World War II recruits required remedial math, and the president of Yale wrote, in 1954, about a high school graduate who seemed intelligent enough to attend Yale but whose high school transcript showed mostly electives in subjects like school choir, social adjustment, etc., with just a smattering of English, history, and the more traditional academic subjects.

Hofstadter's final chapter addresses the tension between intellectuals who are willing to apply their knowledge and abilities to the service of institutions, including government and industry and those, on the other hand, who fear that they will "sell out" and be co-opted by conventional norms if they cooperate too much with society. Hofstadter was optimistic that it was possible for intellectuals to adopt a balanced outlook, cooperating with society and using their talents for its benefit, while always remaining independent-minded enough to apply their own original thinking to society's problems and not simply go along with the crowd.

Hofstadter's untimely death from leukemia at 55, in 1970, certainly deprived America of one of her foremost thinkers. This book, one of about 6 major works that he wrote, is around 450 pages, arranged in chapters of about 30 pages apiece, with notes at the end of each chapter. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to understand how the world's most advanced society can sometimes seem, at the same time, to contain knuckleheads and dunces--some, unfortunately, in positions of power. Again, this is not new--the only question is how we will respond and what kind of society we wish to have.

Chapter One
Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy

Thank goodness it is finally over, Fitzwilliam Darcy thought with a
heavy sigh.

He realized that he probably should not entertain such a thought, but it could not be helped. The past eight weeks of his engagement had held many wonderful moments and all in all had been delightful, but also exceedingly trying. Daily he wanted nothing more than to spend time with his beloved Elizabeth. However, the constant pressures of wedding plans, visits from a seemingly inexhaustible quantity of friends and family, constraints of propriety, and business interests that had taken him from Hertfordshire on several occasions all had conspired to separate him from her far too often. Add to that his own uneasiness with all the social engagements, not to mention his continued distaste for Mrs. Bennet, and the weeks had seemed interminable.

Nonetheless, he thought while gazing lovingly upon his sleeping wife… my wife!… There certainly were some marvelous times to be remembered. In truth, he and Elizabeth had managed to pass numerous satisfying hours together alone, or at least almost alone, yet it never was sufficient as far as Darcy was concerned. She had teased him on occasion for acting like a petulant child whose favorite toy had been taken away. Initially, he had been a bit offended, but then he realized she was correct and had to laugh at himself. Yet he could not deny how bereft he felt without her by his side and how he had treasured every moment that they were together, even if it was brief.

They discovered, much to their mutual joy, that the trials of the previous months, during which each had suffered tremendously, had brought them to a place of complete understanding and honesty. The conversations they now shared were open, deeply profound, intimate, and blessedly free of all artifice and misunderstanding. He had revealed himself to her as he never had to any living soul, not even to his sister or dear Cousin Richard. She had done the same.

They had strived to learn as much as possible about each other. The resulting adoration and respect had only grown deeper with each passing day. And all this before they were married! Now they were truly husband and wife, and Darcy could only imagine their love and communion growing stronger.

He rested his head back against the rocking carriage wall, tightened his arm around Elizabeth, and closed his eyes as his thoughts continued to drift. The ceremony itself had been lovely. The women had triumphed in every aspect of the arrangements. Frankly, Darcy could not have cared less about the decorations as long as his precious Elizabeth became his wife. However, he understood the importance of these things to the ladies and had to admit that the Meryton church and the reception hall at Netherfield were stupendously adorned with flowers in profusion, ribbons and bows, candles and more.

Darcy merely gave it all a cursory glance, eyes riveted to the door. Once Elizabeth entered on the arm of her proud father, Darcy saw or heard very little else. She simply stole away his breath and all conscious thought! How he managed to recite his vows was a mystery. Elizabeth was wearing a simple but lovely white gown of silk with lace along the edges and a golden sash. She had styled her hair in an elaborate design of curls and braids with thin gold ribbon and buds of baby's breath and lavender intertwined. She wore the strand of sapphires he had given her as an engagement gift around her slender neck. Her fine eyes sparkled, her cheeks were rosy, and that special smile only for him highlighted her luscious lips. It was a picture imprinted on his mind's eye and would remain there flawlessly rendered for all of his life.

The lovely and ancient church in Meryton, where the Bennet family had worshipped for years, was perfectly suited for the ceremony. In truth, Darcy had always imagined marrying in the chapel at Pemberley and was mildly saddened initially at the natural choice to marry where both Bennet daughters had grown up. However, he quickly recognized the logic to the decision and realized that he honestly did not care as long as they were married with the sanction of the Church, religion being a vital part of his life.

The elderly vicar performed the traditional ceremony impeccably, his strong voice reciting the vows and quoting Holy Scripture with firm conviction. When Darcy slipped the slim, etched-in-jewels gold band onto Elizabeth's finger, nestling it alongside the sapphire and diamond engagement ring that had been his mother's, it was far and away the most profoundly moving moment in his life.

Elizabeth stirred slightly and he pressed her closer to his side, kissing her gently on the top of her head. He pulled the blanket further over her body and tucked it in. Once he was sure she still slept, he rested his cheek on her head and went back to his daydreams.

The reception at Netherfield was joyous, filled with all of their respective friends and relatives. The food was superb, the musicians exceptional, and the wine of the best vintage. Darcy had an extremely difficult time tearing his eyes away from his bride, but he did manage to congratulate Charles and Jane on their nuptials as well, realizing with a start that Jane looked quite beautiful herself. He was embarrassed to admit that he had not even noticed her presence at the church's altar alongside Elizabeth!

He and Lizzy had previously agreed that they would make their escape as soon as good manners would allow. Darcy had secured lodging at the White Stag Inn near Bedford. He had discovered this superb establishment years earlier while still at Cambridge. Located only a few miles off the main thoroughfare to London—on the turnpike to Cambridge, in fact—it was secluded enough to fulfill his preference for quiet while traveling, but also popular enough as a halting place for those journeying to Newmarket for the races, or on to Suffolk for the sea, so that it was well maintained.

It was also the perfect resting point for the two-day ride between London and Pemberley, a trek he had completed more times that he could remember. He had stayed at the White Stag so frequently over the years that the owners, a pleasant couple named Hamilton, knew him well. They had been ecstatic at the idea of hosting him and his new bride for the initial days of their married life.

All arrangements had been made in advance and, to ensure their privacy, he had rented out the entire second story. Luckily, the late time of year meant the road would be lightly traveled, with hired coaches rarely passing and passengers minimal. Even the pub would see few customers, although it would not matter greatly, as their suite was to the rear of the sturdy red-brick building and well away from the public rooms.

Their luggage had been sent ahead earlier in the day, so all would be ready upon their arrival. Darcy was breathless in anticipation of this night! Not just for the obvious reasons of their promised intimacy and consummation of their marriage, but for the peace and relief from the hustle and bustle of the past two months. Just to be alone with his beloved! Never in his life had any evening been so tremendously and lovingly contemplated.

The carriage pulled off the main road, and Darcy knew they were close to their destination. "Elizabeth," he whispered softly, "wake up, my love; we are almost there."

disappointed
By Carol Scott
I was so excited to get this book, i pre-ordered it, but to my amazement i already have this book but with a different cover. i was disappointed in first all the descriptions of sex, which extended into pages and pages, there was no plot. this author reduced Lizzy into a incompetent love-sick women who basically couldn't function on her own. Lizzy was very outspoken and very independent, that's what attracted darcy to her. i enjoy passion and romance, but not through the whole book. Lizzy had other interests besides the bedroom, her sister jane was very important to her and her father. Again I am very disappointed.

Selected Speeches and Writings of Theodore Roosevelt, by Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) was our most published president with an incredible output of writing includingforty books, over a thousand articles, and countless speeches and letters.

Collected here in one volume are examples of Roosevelt’s voluminous writings over a dazzling array of topics. Organized by general categories, readers can sample writings on subjects as varied as the environment, the danger of professional sports; the famous charge of San Juan Hill, and Roosevelt’s passion for literary criticism. From addresses and presidential messages on public policy and national ideals, to biography, to travel writing, to ecological concerns, to writings on hunting, to international politics and history, Roosevelt’s talents and achievements as a writer went far beyond what we now expect of our public leaders.

Roosevelt’s legacy as one of the first progressive American politicians, his concerns about environmentalism, his internationalism, and his unflinching belief in the American character and destiny uncannily speak to the issues of our own day and can be found in the pages of this representative and judicious anthology of his work.

From Booklist
Viewing Theodore Roosevelt as author rather than as president, editor Hutner showcases the topical breadth of TR’s published works and declamations. In a collection of 24-plus items, readers can range from Roosevelt’s advice on raising boys, opinion about professional sports, and accounts of hunting bears to his invocations of political principles for the public issues of his time. In addition to TR’s varied interests, Hutner primes readers with insightful introductions to Roosevelt’s prose style, which was as muscular and direct as was his advocacy of, as one of his best-known speeches is titled, “The Strenuous Life.” Contemptuous of “a life of slothful ease,” Roosevelt made his personal energy and indomitability infuse much of his writing, which is why it remains historically fascinating a century after his presidency. If his books are not to today’s tastes, they nevertheless capture TR’s aim for accuracy and objectivity. In addition to excerpts from his histories, including The Winning of the West, “among his greatest achievements as a writer,” according to Hutner, this varied volume includes a TR speech on historiography. A judicious anthology well suited to the TR shelf. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
“They don’t make them like TR anymore. This is just as well; one was plenty. But such a one he was! Even today he leaps off the page, grabs the reader by the shoulders and makes him want to mount a horse, climb a peak, or battle the enemies of the public weal. Bully indeed!” —H. W. Brands, author of The Man Who Saved the Union: Ulysses Grant in War and Peace

“An eclectic collection from the highly literate and scholarly president of the United States. Editor Hutner had a difficult task: selecting representative samples from among the mountains of Roosevelt’s publications. Some selections are unsurprising . . . but there are also some welcome surprises. . . . Intriguing pieces, unobtrusively and skillfully edited, that form both a time and a timelesscapsule.” —Kirkus Review

“Although Theodore Roosevelt is most often remembered as a man of action—whether in the White House, on the African savannah or through the Amazon rainforest—what he was first and foremost, and throughout his life, was a man of letters. Roosevelt was not only astonishingly prolific, he was thoughtful, thorough and incredibly eloquent. For this book, Gordon Hutner has carefully chosen not just Roosevelt’s best known work, but his most powerful and stirring writings. It is a striking glimpse into an extraordinary mind, and an absolutely fascinating, endlessly entertaining read.” —Candice Millard, author of The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey

“See Theodore Roosevelt afresh by reading this fascinating collection of newly uncovered essays combined with his historic political and literary preachments. TR defends the reason why nationalism stands behind his brand of conservation of nature and his defense of the welfare state, and he breathes literary fire against the Fourteen Points as well as political reactionaries. A bully read!” —Kathleen Dalton, author of Theodore Roosevelt: A Strenuous Life

“Drawing on his expertise in the politics and culture of the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era and his legendary editorial skills, Gordon Hutner has managed to capture the complexity, creativity, contrariness and combativeness of Theodore Roosevelt, one of our nation's most important politicians and men of letters.” —Glenn Altschuler, Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies, Cornell University

“TR is back and timely. Many of his early twentieth century issues are, in new dress, those of our own early twenty-first century. This collection captures the intellectually omnivorous Roosevelt’s always readable major public writings, making them available to students and the general public.” —Thomas Bender, University Professor of the Humanities and Professor of History, New York University

“Headstrong and articulate, Theodore Roosevelt rarely wandered into the gray areas of indecision and self-doubt, let alone pacificsm. His own uncle said TR would rather bang his head against a stone wall than change direction. TR’s prose, in these aptly-selected passages, reflects the man: blunt despite a Harvard vocabulary, and brimful of a broadly inclusive vision of American optimism despite growing up so wealthy. Throughout his life, Roosevelt carried a soapbox in his back pocket.” —Richard Zacks, author of Island of Vice: Theodore Roosevelt Doomed Quest to Clean Up Sin-Loving New York

Speaking Not So Softly
By Samuel J. Sharp
This is a superb collection of essays on diverse topics, organized by theme and well-introduced by introductory notes from the editors. The essays capture Roosevelt's original vision for citizenship, conservation, foreign policy, and economic regulation. Readers will appreciate the forcefulness of Roosevelt's writing and the steeliness of his convictions. I strongly recommend this book to readers interested in Roosevelt, presidential history, or American political thought generally.

Redefining economics and businesses for the twenty-first century.
In view of the recent meltdown of the economy that gave rise to the great recession, it is pretty obvious that the current economic systems are not working. But economists don’t have a clue about which way to go about modifying the existing models. The two political parties of America are bogged down into a locked-horn position between two existing and decidedly ineffective economic modalities: choosing solely from either the demand side or the supply side model for government intervention to get us out of recession. This book is written for both the businessperson and the consumer, in other words, everyone. It touches upon important issues like creativity and ethics in business. It takes you into the already feasible twenty-first century technologies of vital energy. It informs the reader that the time has come to look for jobs that bring meaning and value into their personal lives. It gives quantum hints for new business leadership: a viable science of manifestation, how to revitalize the business arena, how to transform the energy of money, how to deal with globalization and keep the free market free, how to achieve an economy of sustainability and prevent economic meltdowns, and how to eliminate, once and for all, poverty and hunger.

AMIT GOSWAMI, PhD, is a retired professor of theoretical physics at the University of Oregon. He is a pioneer of the new paradigm of science called “science within consciousness.” In his seminal book, The Self-Aware Universe, he solved the quantum measurement problem elucidating the famous observer effect while paving the path to a new paradigm of science based on the primacy of consciousness. He is the author of nine books, including the textbook Quantum Mechanics, Physics of the Soul, Quantum Doctor, God is Not Dead, and How Quantum Activism Can Save Civilization. He appeared in the films, What the Bleep Do We Know, The Dalai Lama Renaissance, and the award-winning The Quantum Activist. Author residence: Eugene, OR

Quantum Economics Proves Profit Motive and Social Good Are Intertwined
By James Alvino, PhD
Adam Smith – the father of capitalism – would be very happy right now if he were able to read the intriguing and revolutionary new book by Dr. Amit Goswami, Quantum Economics: Unleashing the Power of an Economics of Consciousness. Indeed, Goswami resurrects Adam Smith and revitalizes capitalism in such a way as to pave the road to a world free from extreme economic booms and busts, the widening and debilitating gap between the superrich and poverty stricken, and a vanishing middle class that was supposed to grow under capitalism.

Make no mistake, Goswami heartily supports profit motive, but not just defined or restricted by the values of scientific materialism, or their lack thereof. Based on the principles of quantum physics and what he calls the Science of Consciousness, Goswami calls for the creation and/or expansion of subtle, vital energy products as well – those that enhance the processing of meaning (as opposed to mere information processing), feelings, intuition, and the foundational archetypes that drive fulfillment of our higher ethical and spiritual needs as well as the growth of human capital.

To bring this about on a truly universal scale, to craft a new paradigm for science that breaks the stranglehold of the materialist model that is largely responsible for the pervasive ills our world suffers today, to bring business into alignment with the progressive unfolding, evolutionary movement of consciousness, as is Goswami’s main purpose – these are not small tasks. Quantum Economics takes the necessary quantum leap that could propel his activist message into reality for generations to come.

The book is written for the business community as well as the consumer. It is challenging but accessible even for those without a scientific bent for quantum physics. Goswami provides just the right balance of concept, theory and prescription for implementing truly innovative, vital energy products and services to breathe life into otherwise dead or dying business practices.

Quantum Economics is replete with creative metaphors and analogies, such as the comparison between the “shallow ecology” of environmental sustainability and the “deep ecology” of cleaning up our inner being, moving from hard-wired negative emotions to higher-level, positive emotions that enhance the quality of life – as well as the bottom line! There is nothing like this on the bookshelves of economics or business, and the book is certain to generate lots of discussion as it gains circulation and traction in all sectors of the world’s market economy.

As evidence of his commitment to transforming and developing human capital on both an individual and societal level, Goswami has co-founded Quantum Economics Business Coaching™ to offer lectures, workshops, training and supplemental materials to help entrepreneurs and business owners maximize their profits while also doing social good. To stay abreast of events and developments, you may email jim@QEBusinssCoaching.com.

James Alvino, Ph.D, is founder of Advanced Law of Attraction Training Institute and co-founder of Quantum Economics Business Coaching™. He and Dr. Goswami have partnered to roll out and implement Quantum Economics for top business leaders, CEOs, health and educational organizations throughout the world. Want to become involved? Lesson Plan: An Agenda for Change in American Higher Education, by William G. Bowen, Michael S. McPherson

American higher education faces some serious problems—but they are not the ones most people think. In this brief and accessible book, two leading experts show that many so-called crises—from the idea that typical students are drowning in debt to the belief that tuition increases are being driven by administrative bloat—are exaggerated or simply false. At the same time, many real problems—from the high dropout rate to inefficient faculty staffing—have received far too little attention. In response, William G. Bowen and Michael S. McPherson provide a frank assessment of the biggest challenges confronting higher education and propose a bold agenda for reengineering essential elements of the system to meet them. The result promises to help shape the debate about higher education for years to come.

Lesson Plan shows that, for all of its accomplishments, higher education today is falling short when it comes to vital national needs. Too many undergraduates are dropping out or taking too long to graduate; minorities and the poor fare worse than their peers, reinforcing inequality; and college is unaffordable for too many. But these problems could be greatly reduced by making significant changes, including targeting federal and state funding more efficiently; allocating less money for “merit aid” and more to match financial need; creating a respected “teaching corps” that would include nontenure faculty; improving basic courses in fields such as math by combining adaptive learning and face-to-face teaching; strengthening leadership; and encouraging more risk taking. It won’t be easy for faculty, administrators, trustees, and legislators to make such sweeping changes, but only by doing so will they make it possible for our colleges and universities to meet the nation’s demands tomorrow and into the future.

Review
"Bachelor's degrees should be completed in three years. MOOCs should replace general education. Coding boot camps are the game changer. College should be free. Internships are more important than instruction. Eliminate administrative bloat and higher education will be prosperous. Pick your quick fix for higher education, but it won't be endorsed in Lesson Plan, a new book by William G. Bowen and Michael S. McPherson. They make clear early in the book that while higher education has serious problems, they find most punditry and political proposals for higher education to be wrong."--Scott Jaschik, Inside Higher Ed

"Bowen and McPherson, both experienced foundation leaders and college/university presidents, have written a masterly summary of the state of higher education. . . . They bring together current research, broad conversations with experts, and their own perspective in a brilliant, coherent explanation of their conviction that academia continues to be a vital investment in human capital, for individual students and society, overall. . . . A must-read for everyone concerned about price and quality in higher education."--Library Journal, starred review

"In Lesson Plan, William Bowen, president emeritus of Princeton University and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and Michael McPherson, president of the Spencer Foundation and president emeritus of Macalester College, provide a concise, compelling, and, at times, courageous analysis of the ways in which institutions of higher education are failing to provide equal opportunity and lay out an ambitious reform agenda."--Glenn Altschuler, Huffington Post

"I recommend William Bowen and Michael McPherson's new book Lesson Plan: An Agenda for Change in American Higher Education to anyone who wants a better understanding of the problems in higher education in the US, and especially to anyone who is working in higher education and wants to contribute to improving it. . . . Its recommendations for change should be part of the debate on your campus, whatever your campus is like."--Harry Brighouse, Crooked Timber

"Lesson Plan . . . is a short, yet disarmingly rich and precise, primer on higher-education policy and its compelling relevance for the future of our economy and democracy. Two of the most respected figures in higher-education policy, the authors have led parallel and intertwined careers as economists, college and university presidents, foundation leaders, and scholars of higher education. . . . They are the authors of many of the most important empirical studies in higher education published during the past five decades, and those they did not write, they often sponsored, reviewed, participated in, or advised on. As a result, this latest collaboration--a slim, 140-page volume--combines the precision born of encyclopedic knowledge with the plain-spoken prose of experts for whom policy analysis is second nature."--Clayton Spencer, Harvard Magazine

From the Back Cover

"It has become fashionable to critique higher education. Politicians, journalists, and others are quick to proclaim all that is wrong, typically uninformed by either data or experience. Into this fray step two wise and experienced hands. Bowen and McPherson offer a thoughtful and informed insiders' critique of the academy. Drawing on both data and years of experience as successful college presidents, they shed light on access, costs, completion, time to degree, and the need for strong leadership. This little book should be required reading for all who care about the future of our nation's colleges and universities."--Lawrence S. Bacow, president emeritus of Tufts University

"This accessibly written book provides a concise discussion and analysis of many of the key topics in today's debates about higher education. I don't know of any other book that offers a comprehensive review of these issues in a condensed and readable format."--Rebecca M. Blank, chancellor of University of Wisconsin-Madison

"This short book is big in design, research, and smarts. After winnowing the key issues in American higher education from the noisy multitude, Bowen and McPherson apply the latest data to clarify each before offering a series of astute suggestions for solving them. Their lesson plan should be required reading for every academic administrator and trustee in the country."--James Axtell, College of William and Mary

"One of the central purposes of Lesson Plan is to undermine, through the careful use of data and other forms of evidence, much of the nonsense that passes for analyses of higher education in the popular press, the political sphere, and even the ostensibly scholarly world. The book provides a healthy, provocative, and much-needed dose of careful reasoning and sometimes daring advocacy for change. And its discussion of the financing of higher education is the best I have ever read."--Brian C. Rosenberg, president of Macalester College

"This small book punches way above its weight. The authors don't just identify major issues confronting American higher education. They use their considerable skill and wisdom to debunk common misperceptions and they chart a path guiding colleges and universities to safer harbors from the roiling waters they inhabit today. All who care about higher education and its indispensable role in advancing society should not just read this book; they should study it carefully."--William Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland

"Bowen and McPherson hit it just right with Lesson Plan. The messages on issues ranging from student debt to pointless PhD programs are perfectly clear and impeccably argued. The powers that be will find this book impossible to ignore."--Robert M. Solow, Nobel Laureate in Economics

I read this short book over the course of a weekend . . . lots and lots of data populate its pages; lots of references are cited; several specific recommendations offer . . . the primary one 'Higher education leadership, don't be afraid of taking a risk."

The OT Bible for Physical Dysfunction
By Luke Deandrade
I'm in OT school right now and this is our bible for interventions concerning physical dysfunction. I know in a beautiful world without production quotas we would all look up meta-analysis studies before working with each patient, but this give you a quick run down of the most important things to do, look for, and not do. I will be buying the revised edition whenever it comes out.

Very helpful
By tle1969
this is actually a really good textbook. We use many books in our program that are really dry and do not provide case study examples. This text makes it easier to understand the topics because of the "extra" information throughout the chapters: references, case studies, etc.

Great resource

I bought this to have as an all-in-one resource for OT practical skills before going out on req 16 wk fieldwork. I have found it helpful and am using it to study for the boards.
