Humanitarian Intervention: A HistoryFrom Cambridge University Press

The dilemma of how best to protect human rights is one of the most persistent problems facing the international community today. This unique and wide-ranging history of humanitarian intervention examines responses to oppression, persecution and mass atrocities from the emergence of the international state system and international law in the late sixteenth century, to the end of the twentieth century. Leading scholars show how opposition to tyranny and to religious persecution evolved from notions of the common interests of 'Christendom' to ultimately incorporate all people under the concept of 'human rights'. As well as examining specific episodes of intervention, the authors consider how these have been perceived and justified over time, and offer important new insights into ideas of national sovereignty, international relations and law, as well as political thought and the development of current theories of 'international community'.

Review
"Humanitarian Intervention is both well-conceived and well-executed as an edited collection. The essays and editors' remarks alike are integrated seamlessly, with enough contextual overlap to see the connections between chapters. Additionally, this book does not give the sense of a teleological 'progress' towards modern conceptions of intervention. Rather, the diversity of the contributions adds to the impression that in each case there were historically contingent decisions being made in response to local and international, as well as timely legal and moral understandings of humanitarian intervention."
Reviews in History

"One of Simms and Trim's expressed objectives is to show the 'rich and varied' history of humanitarian intervention, which is definitely achieved."
International Affairs

"... a rich and stimulating attempt to explain foreign intervention for humanitarian purposes."
English Historical Review

"... editors Brendan Simms and D. J. B. Trim have produced a critically important historical analysis of the policies, practices, and purposes of foreign intrusions in the affairs of other nations for humanitarian purposes from the 1500s to the present. ... The single volume compilation is not exhaustive in its treatment, nor could it be, but its essays are historically and conceptually rich."
The Journal of World History

"The historic analysis is insightful yet targets certain issues within the intervention debate, which makes reading the book challenging and exciting ..."
The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs

"Within the vast literature on the issue of humanitarian intervention this is an extraordinary book. It sheds light on the historical development of this concept from the most varied angles and the insights it offers are in many ways enlightening ... this book is highly recommendable for everyone interested in the question of humanitarian intervention and in the history of international law in general."
Peter Hilpold, Europa Ethnica

In a critical time in the US where the talk of immigration, migrant children and families and the overall movement around the nation is everyday politics, Ingrid gives us a collection of poetry where we can pause, close our eyes and visualize her words. This is an excellent read!!

The world's most famous detective. The most brilliant mind in fiction. But before he became the great detective, who was young Sherlock Holmes?

Sherlock knows that Amyus Crow, his mysterious American tutor, has some dark secrets. But he didn't expect to find a notorious killer, hanged by the US government, apparently alive and well in Surrey - and Crow somehow mixed up in it. When no one will tell you the truth, sometimes you have to risk all to discover it for yourself. And so begins an adventure that will take Sherlock across the ocean to America, to the centre of a deadly web - where life and death are cheap, and truth has a price no sane person would pay.

Fun read

A big fan of Sherlock Holmes I enjoyed this story about Young Sherlock — Rebel Fire. Yes, to be honest there was a lot that could have been approved on but overall it was simply a fun, easy read.

I enjoyed how we get to know Sherlock as a young boy. His development of how the boy comes into his own and becomes the man is fun as we discover life with him. He is a little on the whiney side, so unlike his confident grown up self, always questioning instead of just going for it dragging everyone along with him. Bringing in his violin playing and bee keeping helping to bond the young and the old Sherlock was nice.

At times the dialogue wasn’t strong but it wasn’t horrific either. I think as the series proceeds it will sharpen but then maybe I am just comparing too much to the original Sherlock.

I was able to visualize most of the scenery or where they were at each step of the way. Some scenes were shaky but still good. I realized that even though a lot of these characters aren’t in the original books, they are here to set him up to become the man he is to become. Just as people come and go in our lives for reason if only to mold us into the person we are to become.

Overall I enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read the next one even if they are predictable at times. This is the second in the series and I am going to read the first one here shortly. Then go onto the next. Easy fun read to take your mind off of everything.

Young Sherlock is back
By John Cox
Andrew Lane's second Young Sherlock Holmes book, RED LEECH, is every bit as enjoyable as his first. This time Holmes is off to America in pursuit of dastardly Confederates who are harboring a living (but deranged) John Wilkes Booth. Not sure why the publicity doesn't play up the Booth angle (it's not mentioned in the plot blurbs, etc.), because this is a heck of a hook! This Young Sherlock book is less of a mystery and more of fast-paced chase, with many imaginative set-pieces and terrific action. Sherlock's time aboard the paddle steamer SS Scotia is my favorite part of the book. Lane has obviously done some excellent research, and his description of the ship and voyage really transports the reader. I also enjoyed Sherlock learning the violin during this section, and meeting a very famous German ballon enthusiast (I won't spoil it, but it shouldn't be too hard to guess). All the American locations are wonderfully drawn, as are the villains, and I really love that we get to see Holmes use his first disguise while in New York City.

My only (constructive) criticism is there is no puzzling mystery that anchors the book and motivates Holmes' investigation (aside from the living Booth -- which is not really treated as mystery). Yes, the villains do have a master plan, but their plan is not teased out with clues that Sherlock sniffs out along the way. As I said, it's really just a kidnap and chase, and all is revealed to Holmes (James Bond style) when he reaches the end of the line. But I guess there's nothing necessarily wrong with this. In fact, I think the core readership will love the fast pace over mind work. But one of the things I so loved about Death Cloud is that it had the mystery of the killer smoke at its heart. That made it a Holmes book. Something to think about for book 3, BLACK ICE, which cannot come soon enough for this (Young) Sherlock Holmes fan!

Here's hoping we see more of a teenage Holmes in the future
By Teen Reads
Sherlock Holmes has solved some of the greatest mysteries, battled with diabolical criminals, and basically out-thought even the smartest of men. It comes as somewhat of a relief, then, to know that at some point he went through puberty just like everyone else. Andrew Lane once again provides a glimpse into the life of teenage Holmes in REBEL FIRE, the second book that explores how the Holmes legend began. Most of Sherlock's adventures are centered on London, England, but this time he unwittingly becomes involved in a case that has an American twist.

The last thing Sherlock wants is his tutor, Amyus Crowe, and Crowe's lovely daughter, Virginia, to leave. But Crowe feels compelled to return to America once Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's older brother, shows up with some troubling news. Apparently, John Wilkes Booth, the man who shot President Abraham Lincoln, may still be alive and in hiding somewhere very close. Naturally inquisitive, Sherlock takes it upon himself to investigate. With the help of his friend Matty, Sherlock manages to stumble upon a group of men hiding Booth. Of course, chaos ensues. After a minor mishap, Sherlock arrives back to tell Crowe and Mycroft that Booth is in fact alive, but fleeing back to America.

Crowe immediately makes plans to track these men, and since Sherlock and Matty are the only ones to see what they look like, they are invited along for the ride. On the way to the port, though, Matty is taken hostage, and it's up to Sherlock, Crowe and Virginia to help rescue him. This is easier said than done, and before Sherlock can even think about helping Matty, he'll first need to survive the boat ride to America. Apparently the group that is protecting Booth is not very happy that someone has stumbled upon their little scheme --- especially a teenager. Trouble is found in all places, and Sherlock has his hands full on the ship in the middle of the ocean.

It wouldn't be a Sherlock Holmes mystery without a mastermind criminal, and REBEL FIRE doesn't disappoint in that department. Let's just say that blood-sucking leeches are involved somehow, and I'll leave it at that. Despite Sherlock's initial focus of just finding Matty, he soon becomes embroiled in a much larger scheme of a few leaders from the South hoping to restart the devastating American Civil War. It's going to take all of Sherlock's ingenuity, smarts and willpower to escape unscathed this time.

It's not very often that you get the chance to see the origins of legendary characters such as Sherlock Holmes, and the Conan Doyle Estate certainly believes that Andrew Lane's storytelling has done a credible job of bringing a young Holmes to life. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, apparently, as it is interesting to see the interplay between Sherlock and Mycroft and where Sherlock might have picked up a few of his tricks of perception. Lane also stays true to the fact that Holmes will put himself in the midst of any mystery, even if it means danger, in order to save the day. Here's hoping we see more of teenage Holmes in the future.

Very factual and less than imaginative; shallow analysis
By Jaewoo Kim
As an avid reader, I thought many chapters of this book stated facts, ideas, and deductions that have been told and maybe even retold in other publications and best sellers. To me this book was quite redundant.

The book has 20 chapters and each chapter is written by a different writer associated with the Economist magazine.

For many chapters, the title was more noteworthy than the content. For example, in a chapter titled "The exponential future", the author basically restates the title. The future technology will grow exponentially and it will have profound (only couple of vague examples given) impact on the future. In another chapter lableled "The Asian century", the author states that China's rising population and economy will make a substantial impact on the global economy and the Asian economy as a whole. Oh really? So where is the deeper analysis and imagination?

If you have never read a book about the future trends (probably majority), then the contents in this book will be very noteworthy. I meet way too many Americans who are still stuck with "America is #1" mentality when America is quickly losing its edge in practically everything. For example, as this book states, did you know that America's life expectancy is not even top 30 in the world? The book also highlights that America's wealth doesn't coincide with its quality of life, which is low by OECD standards. Yes, Americans live way better than countries like North Korea, but its quality of life pales in comparison to many wealthier nations. The future doesn't look that much brighter either. It hurts me that America is losing its competitive and quality-of-life edge and it is frustrating to see how little of this is known by the general American public.

I recommend this book to the general population. I recommend it far less to those who are already familiar with much of the problems and advancements facing America and the world today how they might impact the future.

The storms of creative destruction are blowing us to a better place
By Ron Immink
This is a quote directly from "Megachange, the world in 2050". Another future babble book in the same vain as "Everything we know is wrong", "Future Files", "Physics of the future", "Future minds" and "Flash foresight".

The book covers

Population (Demography is destiny, 9 billion by 2050, time bomb in ageing population, water, political violence, food, carbon)
Health '(old age, innovation, gnome sequencing)
Women' (will equalize, with choice comes pressure)
Social media' (Facebook, gaming, politics, mobile, embedded into products)
Culture '(art, local, importance of language)
Religion '(10,000 religions, unbelief biggest, fun)
Global warming' (Unrealistic rhetoric of action, Antarctica, technology)
War' (China, technology, robots, nuclear)
Freedom '(Berlesconifaction, complacency, fragmentation)
The state '(f***ed, not making hard decisions)
Emerging markets '(not for long, BRICKs, education and prosperity, services)
Globalisation (in trade, not in movement of people)
Rich and poor' (narrowing between countries, not between people)
Creative destruction (Schumpeter as the new economic theory, innovation, entrepreneurship, frugal innovation)'
Market momentum (volatility of stock market)
Science' (Everything will be biology, China not sited in academia, mindset)
Space '(Aliens and space travel)
The internet (Memex, information overload, sensor dust, 13 billion devices, quickening adoption rates, DNA computers, 2045 singularity event)
Distance (location, Hybrid networks)
Future babble (the future is bright, invisibility of good news)

Recurring themes

The recurring themes are China (mixed story there), technology, biology as the new black (nano is sooo pase), the impact of population growth on the planet and its resources and dependent on where you are coming from, a sense of opportunity and optimism or a sense of impending doom.

Schumpeter

I am firmly on the optimistic side and my favourite chapter is "Schumpeter Inc", which talks about "unleashing flocks of black swans", radical reduction in the life span of businesses, turbulence, SUPER high speed broadband (100 times faster), professional guilds, frugal innovation (houses for $ 300), tidal waves of change, the emerging economies as the cauldron of innovation, embedded sensors, complicated careers, managing life as an opportunity, etc., etc. Flux, chaos, opportunity!

Tidal waves of change

That chapter speaks my language and as I have written many, many times before, as a business you ignore the "tidal wave of change" at your peril. But to go back to the start of this blog; "The storms of creative destruction are blowing us to a better place". How cool is that!? Schumpeter as the new economic theory to future growth and prosperity for the world, but hopefully also for your business.

Average and wtihout real insight
By GPerenic
The book is a compilation of average journalistic articles about changes happening around us. No real insight as to what can be expected and what will be the real long-term and concrete impact from these changes. Try reading bold and insightful authors like Ray Kurzweil instead.

Seeing Anthropology
By Anonymous
I took several of Dr. Heider's classes while attending the University of South Carolina. I still look back on his courses as the highlight of my academic career. I remember some of the films from my university days and have been searching for them since. The book is structured well, explores a variety of topics, and expertly weaves a discussion of the films included into the chapters of the book. I have long since graduated but enjoy reading this book and watching the films just to get re-engaged with cultural anthropology.

Best introductory Text Available on the market
By John Rainwater
This is an excellent text. Any professor searching for a Cultural Anthropology text needn't look any further. Heider presents the material in a very interesting, concise, and very clear way. Heider clearly illustrates the holistic approach to anthropology and explores that avenue in an exciting way.

Wood of the Cradle, Wood of the Cross: The Little Way of the Infant Jesus, by Caryll Houselander

How, even as an infant, Jesus suffered for you: learn the neglected and misunderstood lessons of His cradle. God could have come into the world as an adult, but He chose instead to be born as a baby to teach you key lessons about who He is and what He calls you to be - lessons that most Christians miss. No longer. In these eye-opening pages, Caryll Houselander reveals the powerful spiritual implications of one startling fact: in the manger, even as angels guarded and shepherds sought Him, the baby Jesus was already suffering for your sins. For your sake, our majestic God became a helpless infant at the mercy of His creatures. At the beginning of His life on earth, the God who raised the canopy of the heavens let Himself be raised off the cold ground by the humble wood of His cradle. With stunning and splendid humility, He was bound by gravity to that cradle just as firmly as He later would be bound by nails to the wood of His Cross - which again raised Him above the stony ground, once more at the mercy of those He created. In these facts, Caryll Houselander discovers a wealth of spiritual insights that give dramatic new meaning to Jesus' admonition that you must "become like a little child." With brilliant simplicity and holy warmth, she shows that in order to do so - and in order to know and love Jesus truly - you must transcend the cute baby Jesus of the sentimental hymns and come to see the Infant as He really is: our God of suffering and majesty, who even in the cradle shows you the straight path to holiness: the little way of the infant Jesus.

Some truths need to be told over and over again. Our Lord repeated certain truths about Himself and used certain images of Himself over and over again, like the rhyme in a song. Repetition not only instills an idea into our minds, but it has the same power that rhythm has to make the idea part of us and dear to us, even when it is hard in itself - and this gently and easily, just as a tune heard many times, sometimes quite unconsciously, becomes part of us and dear to us. But there is a difference between Christ's repetition and ours. He speaks creative words because He is God, and because, as man, He is a poet whom no other poet has ever come near to: His words echo and re-echo through the human heart. We, on the other hand, tend to become tedious in repetition, even when the thing that we are saying concerns God and is beautiful in itself. Yet everyone who writes about the Christ-life knows that unless certain things are repeated in every book he writes, much of it, or all of it, will be almost meaningless to many who read it. This is just such a book, and since the basic fact of the Christ-life, which is the key to everything in it, is the indwelling presence of Christ in us, I will repeat not something I have written about it before, but our Lord's own words telling us of it, on the night before He died: "It is the truth-giving Spirit, for whom the world can find no room, because it cannot see Him, cannot recognize Him. . . . He will be continually at your side, nay, He will be in you." "When that day comes, you will learn for yourselves that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you." "You have only to live on in me, and I will live on in you." "I am the vine, you are its branches; if a man lives on in me, and I in him, then he will yield abundant fruit; separated from me, you have no power to do anything." "I have bestowed my love upon you, just as my Father has bestowed His love upon me; live on, then, in my love. You will live on in my love, if you keep my commandments, just as it is by keeping my Father's commandments that I live on in His love."

Penguin Atlas of World History
By J. Lindner
This two book set is the same as the old Anchor Atlas of World History though volume 2 has been updated to bring the set more or less to the present. I fell in love with the Anchor Atlas set to the point I wore out my first set so I bought a second set. Then the publisher took the book out of print. It stayed that way until the last couple of years when Penguin took over.

These atlases are perhaps the most comprehensive of any similar books on the market. One or two come close, but I think Penguin's atlas is still the best if you are looking for a brief overview. Critics say the print is too small or the content is not detailedenough. I disagree with both criticisms. I believe a historical atlas should be brief. The intent is to cover an event and depict it in maps. If in depth analysis is wanted, then find a book dedicated to the particular topic.

I bring these books with me whenever I travel and want something to read. In fact, back in high school we had a group assignment of what books we would bring along if we were to be stranded on a desert island. I convinced my group these books were worthy of such a list. With them back in print I can finally discard my first set (the glue binding disintegrated leaving me with single pages. I bought this set to the cabin for casual reading up there. Now I can bring my first replacement set up there.

I just can't say enough good things about these books. I did notice a flaw in a map label in volume 2 that has not been corrected since the initial publication. In a map showing the early United States they label as "Minnesota Territory" those lands which were originally the Wisconsin Territory after Michigan gained statehood. This flaw leads me to wonder about other maps whose labels I'm not as well versed it. But overall I still remain very impressed with this set. Anyone who buys this set for what it is: an introduction to the topics it presents accompanied by detailed maps, will not be disappointed.

History's Bible
By Kochevnik
This and Volume II are reprints of the old Anchor Atlas of World History. I received that edition as a birthday present when I was 10, and it played a huge role in the development of my passion for history. Leaving through the pages year after year wore the old edition out for day to day use(it is still faithfully preserved!), and I was happy to replace it with the reprint.

For the size, portability, and cost, you cannot do any better than this. Yes, the print is tiny, and much of it is basically written in shorthand My dad read through it back in the day and wondered who "Gks" were (the Greeks). The maps are detailed, but stylized, and can definitely use geographic terms in somewhat misleading or cryptic ways.

The book isn't Euro-centric: it's German centric. I suppose this makes sense as, if I recall, it was originally published as a supplement to a German history TV documentary aired in the late 60s. But the upshot is that you *will* know everything you never wanted to know about the Ottonians, the Invesititure crisis, the Hohenstaufens, the Interregnum, the House of Luxemburg, etc. etc.: Germany gets five maps with the same number of pages of text for the High Middle Ages (900-1200) alone. East Asia gets its history from about 200 to 1200 squished into a page. But overall, it is still an excellent reference, with useful dynastic family trees, schematic diagrams, and very detailed overviews of world history topics. The sections on ancient history are simply great as a reference. It is indispensable for the historian.

Pound for pound the best there is...no contest
By Jacques Talbot
I have loved maps and history for longer than I care to admit and I was fortunate enough to have a father who shared these interests and provided a fertile and far-ranging "garden" of books for my edification and enjoyment growing up. One of my favorites was this book. The story skips ahead many years--I decided to look for this book, which had been out of print or at least unavailable for a long time. I found it here on Amazon and ordered it, along with another larger highly touted atlas from another publisher (rated #1 by another reviewer). Much to my delight and surprise, the Penguin atlas has aged quite well (to be expected given the period covered). Its strength lies in the abundance and thoroughness of the map coverage--where other atlases give one map, this one often gives three or more--and in the "extracurricular" material such as diagrams illustrating governmental organization. Incidentally, I was sorely disappointed in the other atlas, which cost far more and sported foolish and uninformative cartographic projections as well as such vast lacunae in coverage as to render it virtually worthless as a serious reference.

As I see it, the heart of any atlas worth its salt must be its maps and this compact, user-friendly little volume offers such a wealth of these that it exposes other historical atlases as the patchy, inadequate waste of paper most of them are. I don't buy an atlas for text--though this atlas has excellent if necessarily skeletal narrative accompaniment--I buy it for the maps, to complement my reading. There's nothing sillier than an "atlas" that overdoes it on the text at the expense of the maps; oddly enough, Penguin also publishes some of what I consider the worst atlases available today (see their atlas of the Roman Empire for a prime example)--go figure.

Really this atlas does everything right. My sole complaint is the small size, but this could just as easily be considered a plus (for portability, ease of use, etc.); if only there were a large format historical atlas to match--I'm still looking for a worthy counterpart.

Far too many spelling errors; many dates not clearly written i.e. June ij, 1943, etc. thought it was written by someone who did not have knowledge of English language, grammar or spelling.
Certainly not worth $23.00-- a very poor purchase.
I would not recommend this e-book to anyone.

Required reading for a WWII historian or buff
By Vince G
Martin Blumenson probably doesn't enough credit for stitching together the diaries of this amazingly complex man and military mind. Then again, it seems few if any have gained the unparalleled access to GSP Jr.'s letters and diaries. Taken of course in conjunction with Volume 1 (1885-1940), one sees a vivid picture of a tremendously gifted military man, a person so deeply spiritual in one moment, yet ravenous for the destruction of his enemies the next. Three things Blumenson highlighted that I found most thoughtful and salient: (1) Patton's deep, exacting grasp of military history -- seemingly, all the way back to when the first caveman bashed the other with a club; (2) his all-encompassing mantra of a self-destiny that must be fulfilled, and (3) how completely wedded he was to the dictum that the most disciplined and principled troops will win the day. Blumenson's work takes the common, two-dimensional mainstream picture of Patton -- slash-and-dash tank commander with a penchant for being a martinet -- and produces instead a tremendously deep, textured portrait of one of the most intriguing military figures of the century. Lastly, Blumenson's exacting eye gives the reader a strong rendition of the men of "The Greatest Generation" -- before they were called that -- through Patton's eyes and the man's devotion to his troops.

A Great Insight to one of the Greatest Military Minds Ever
By Archie M.
The Patton Papers (1940-1945) is actually part two of a two part series. While the first part covers the first 55 years of General George S. Patton's life this book details the period leading up to Americas involvement in WW II and takes the reader through all of Patton's ordeals. The Author, Martin Blumenson, has taken General Pattons own words from letters and diary entires to paint a wonderfully detailed portrait of Patton, not only as a military officer but as a human being. This book captures the true spirit of Patton. His ego-mania, his drive for success both on the battlefield and off, his sometimes paranoia about other officers, especially Montgomery. Patton was a very complex figure and no book that I have read really comes close to explaining his personality better than this one. Best of all, this book details his military genius, through all of World War II, including his end-run in France to liberate Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. What is also interesting is how Patton was unable to adapt to peace-time, leading to his dismissal as post-war occupational governor of Bavaria.
If you're interested in WWII and Patton intriques you as he does me, I would highly recommend this book. It truly gives you a great understanding of the man instead of the myth.
