Place is one of the most fundamental concepts in human geography. This short introduction marries familiar everyday uses of the term with the more complex theoretical debates that have grown up around it.

This text makes debates about intelligible to students, using illustrations from the news, popular culture, and everyday life as a way into more abstract ideas. It traces the development of the concept of place from the 1950s through its subsequent appropriation by cultural geography and the linking of place to politics. Substantial parts of exemplary papers by Doreen Massey and David Harvey are included as a focus for discussion, and the author also considers empirical examples of ways in which the concept of place has been mobilised in research.

Teaching and learning aids include an annotated bibliography, lists of key readings and texts, a survey of web resources, and suggestions for pedagogical resources and student projects.

About the Author
Tim Cresswell is Professor in Social and Cultural Geography at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He is the author of In Place / Out of Place (1996) and The Tramp in America (2001). He is also the co-editor of Mobilizing Place. Placing Mobility (2003) and Engaging Film (2002).

I wish this was a great deal better than it actually is

I'm coming out of a many-year hibernation as regards Amazon reviews to warn you away from this book, and it doesn't give me any pleasure to do so.

I was considering it as a basic text for students in my ITP course "Urban Experience in the Networked Age," who are at graduate level, but generally won't have had much in the way of background in geography. I found the notion of a brisk overview of conceptions of place pretty appealing, and still do. And there are, indeed, a lot of things to like in this book -- it functions very well as an annotated bibliography, albeit an expensive one.

Why no more than that? Unfortunately, in Cresswell's hands, the mischaracterizations (particularly of Lefebvre and Heidegger) crop up early, continue throughout, and would require so much repair and backfill to correct that in the end it's just not worth my time as an instructor. The mischaracterization of work I am acquainted with was serious enough that I began to doubt Cresswell's gloss on writers and thinkers I wasn't familiar with.

There are dozens of typos (among other howlers, Heidegger's Dasein is repeatedly rendered "desein"), sentences go unpunctuated, and beyond matters of copy, the volume stands badly in need of an editor. "Activities and forms of human life and culture which threatened regional and place-based distinctiveness were thus a threat" (p. 18)? You don't say.

The tragedy here is that I'm sure Cresswell's aims and goals are largely identical with my own, and I don't think for a second he set out to write a bad book. I really wish I could wave a magic wand and turn "Place" into the book its author and I both clearly wanted it to be, but sadly, that's beyond my abilities.

Very Helpful

Cresswell's volume is one of the most helpful for those starting out with discussions of place. He deftly moves between the complexities, central figures, and history of place. Cresswell helpfully summarizes many of the arrayed arguments pointing to differences and similarities. Perhaps one of the most helpful components of the text is the Chapter 5 resources for further study of place including books, papers, journals, other approaches, as well as, student projects and exercises to grapple with concepts and practice of place.

Interesting Sense of Humor

The author has a sense of humor that catches you off-guard when you're reading. This a good book to start off a Rhetoric of Place class, or begin your study of place. Most of the authors referenced in the book are people that I come across again and again in my readings. Great summary book that spans across dozens of lead-aways from discussions of the "other" to being "out of place" and "non-places" etc. Cresswell does a brilliant job of making it all cohesive. I wish he would have added more examples for his chapter on Harvey and Massey, but other than that, he makes some wonderful connections that make it easier to delve into a confusing topic.

By 1971, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones and Janis Joplin were dead and Jim Morrison soon would be. Equally troubled, the Rolling Stones, those bad boy icons of the era, took their decadent circus to the French Riviera to escape British taxes and record an album. In a slang-filled present tense, Greenfield (Dark Star: An Oral Biography of Jerry Garcia) gives good gossip about the mayhem that ensued at the Villa Nellcote, the palatial mansion—and supposed former Gestapo headquarters—that Keith Richards rented as his getaway. Greenfield tells of who slept with whom, Keith's outlaw antics and the massive amounts of drugs consumed. The central story, however, is the struggle between Keith and Mick Jagger, who was increasingly drawn to high society, typified by his marriage to Bianca Perez-Mora. A who's who of celebs passed through Nellcote that summer, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono and Gram Parsons. In the last analysis, it's amazing that the Stones managed to record an album at all, but Exile on Main Street may well be their greatest. Greenberg's writing is cliched at times, but his account is energetic. In the end, he takes sides (Keith's mostly) and settles scores, but that only ups the entertainment value. (Nov.)

*Starred Review* Greenfield focuses on the early post-Jones era, when Jagger and Richards were esteemed songwriters, and the band was starting to make money in piles. Picking up approximately where his S.T.P.: A Journey through America with the Rolling Stones (1974) left off, he recounts happenings at Richards' French villa, where the album Exile on Main Street was recorded in summer 1971. Jagger, having recently dumped Marianne Faithfull, was married to jet-setting Bianca, whose antipathy for Richards and cohorts was reciprocated. Richards was in the middle of a long liaison with dissolute actress, scenester, and Faithfull-friend Anita Pallenberg. The Stones had extricated themselves from manager Allen Klein and, thanks to Jagger's banker buddy Prince Rupert Lowenstein, were about to begin self-marketing. Complicating things were Richards', Pallenberg's, and assorted resident playmates' heroin addiction, which brought Corsican drug dealers, local scumbags, and sleazoid Richards factotum Spanish Tony Sanchez into the mix, so to speak. Greenfield merrily corrects Sanchez's and others' published misstatements and serves up such treats as Richards' description of Jagger as several of the nicest guys one could hope to meet. Rough, raw, and ironic by turns, he lays down the facts of how heroin enslaved and immobilized the band at a time when everything seemed within its grasp. So doing, this wry depiction of a dark, decadent moment in rock history inspires a certain demented nostalgia. Mike Tribby

Massive Disappointment

I was excited to discover this, as like several others, I thought his previous Stones book was fantastic. But in the intervening years the author has become insufferably pompous, egotistical and clich�-ridden. He also appears to have fired his editor.

The author's habit of continually inserting song titles/lyrics and even bits of Shakespeare (without quotation marks,just to prove how effortless it all is) is as annoying as listening to some teenager say "like" every other word. For example: "Clowns to the left of him, jokers to the right, there he is, stuck in the middle with Keith", and as for the last line in the book, it deserves throwing against a wall. The constant uses of "Philip Michael Jagger" and also of the present tense are both increasingly irritating to the point of distraction. And the bit where he breaks off to slag off other Stones book authors is hilariously crass and at the same time pahetic.

Please allow me to quote a paragraph as a perfect illustration of the author's style; if you can get to the end of it without choking, this book is for you!

"Before any of this happens, Keith and Anita pull a Houdini. No pun intended, they take a powder. Like Bonnie & Clyde, they go on the lam. They skedaddle. They do the cow-cow boogie out the big front door of Nellcote...and then head as fast as they can for the airport in Nice where they board a plane and fly to safety. Like Elvis, Keith and Anita have now left the building. They have flown the coop."

Hey, Greenfield, you forgot "They are ex-residents, they have ceased to be..."

Gets to be irritating.

This book is generally a fast read, and I picked up some information about the Stones I didn't know. However, it is seriously flawed for two reasons. First, the author has a ceaseless set of cliches that abound through this whole book. A couple well spaced phrases would have been clever. Consistently starting paragraphs with sentences referring to someone being like a "crossfire hurricane", among many more, really starts to grate on the reader. My major complaint, however, is one page after seriously criticizing two other authors' books (this includes a long winded paragraph on how one author was wrong, and should contact this author if he ever needed help with accuracy, and another book reference stating he liked the other author's salad dressing, but hated his book), the books states that "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was on the Sticky Fingers album, which it certainly was not. For me, the credibility, and likeability, of the author was ruined a third of the was through the book. High handed arrogance doesn't work so well when the critic is carelessly wrong himself. His writing style lost me before that, but after I invested that much time, I waded through to the end.

Ugh. A Festival of Cliches

Any time I crack open a book and find it to be double-spaced, I know I'm in trouble. You know what I mean: Not enough material for a "real" book. I've not been more disappointed in a book in a very long time. It's one sad, very predictable cliche after another coupled with horribly useless and overly long descriptions of characters that add nothing to what should have -- and could have -- been a very good story. The photos are just awful; they're outrageously dull and very poorly printed. Please, please don't buy this book expecting any real insight or anything even marginally interesting about life with The Stones while Exile was being recorded. How could something so potentially interesting be so pitifully dull? Sigh.

Don't bother, it's not really about how type and design influence behavior

Just picked this up from the mailbox today. Meh. Not worth the money (If I had looked at this in a bookstore, I would have put it down after 20 seconds and walked away). The title is a complete cheat, there is no analysis of how behavior is influenced. Quite a lot of the samples are not in english, although the book is in english. So you can't really interpret those messages, part of what makes type work is READING it. A lot of the images seem like student exercises. It's going back today.

She studies children's roles as passive viewers and interactive players in the growth of media spinoffs, and in the role of multinational conglomerates in shaping the media. Extensive bibliographic notes and an appendix are included. Despite the timeliness and general interest of Kinder's subject, the book's scholarly tone places it beyond the general reader. Although the interpretations are often thought-provoking and original, public libraries would be better served by Patricia Marks Greenfield's Mind and Media ( LJ 4/15/84). Kinder (Critical Studies/USC School of Cinema-Television) argues that the ``supersystem'' comprised of TV, video games, and movies aimed at children not only urges them to buy specific products but also indoctrinates them in the ways of post-modern consumer culture. Drawing on recent work in feminist psychoanalysis, Althusser's economic theories of social indoctrination, and Piaget-inspired studies of child development, as well as her observations of her own son and a small sample of his peers, Kinder maps out a media network that exploits children's desire to master threatening situations through play by prescribing and rewarding precisely the kinds of play that make them dedicated consumers. In an especially probing chapter on Saturday morning TV, Kinder explores the ways programs like Muppet Babies and Garfield and Friends reconfigure their young audience's desires for reassurance, control, and fantasy as desires for a ``virtual reality'' whose stability is associated with the title figures--and, ultimately, as desires for the things they can buy that will guarantee that reality. Other chapters, less bold in their analysis, consider similar ``interpellations''--indoctrinations of children as consumers--by Nintendo games and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Brilliant exploration of children's media culture.

This highly original analysis of children's interaction with media combines detailed descriptions of shows like "Muppet Babies" and "Garfield" with a sophisticated commentary on the global economy. In an age when most authors writing about children and the media talk only about violence, this book presents a much more comprehensive account of how media shape the way children perceive the world. It includes a fascinating and at times humorous description of her own son's interaction with media (television, movies, and video games) from infancy to age eight. It provides the only convincing account of why the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were so popular. No wonder "Mother Jones" chose it as one of a hundred books recommended to President Clinton on his assumption of the presidency. What is so satisfying about this book is that it is as entertaining to the layman--a must for parents--as it is to the specialist in cultural studies. In clear prose, Kinder makes all her material entirely accessible, without jargon.

Great Trad Bow Reference, Great Bios, Great Stories

First my disclaimer...I don't know Mr. Bertalan. I state this so you know that I am totally impartial.

This is a great book for anyone interested in Archery, especially Traditional Archery. Even the armchair adventurer will find some wonderful gems in this very well written book. (I read a lot, and know good writing). It contains not only what you would expect from the title, but so much more. Over 500 pages of 20th (21st) century Archery history are featured in the 31 chapters featuring 30 prominent bowyers. A chapter may start with a bowhunting story or painting a portrait of the picturesque settings where a bowyer performs his magic, or any number of ways that pull a reader into a good yarn without the obvious formulaic monotony. Each chapter is as if you bumped into a friend and he said..." I met this guy named Fred Bear (et al) whose been making archery bows over in Grayling. Let me tell you a bit about him.

Do you know what prompted Ken Beck to buy Black Widow from the renowned Wilson Bros.,after several other entreprenuerial endeavors foundered? It's a sad story but I'm glad I know it. I feel far more connected to him as a member of the macrocosmic community of hunting first, and the microcosmic (but growing) community of Tradition Bowhunters and target archers.

Tim Meigs whose wife Fern was on the cover of Trad Bowhunter Magazine when she passed, has a wonderful hunting story called "The Skinny Dip Buck". Tim arrows a nice buck drinking at the pond, the deer falls into the pond and starts swimming, he runs down the hill to get a kill shot and slips on a cow pie. He gets his kill shot and the deer starts sinking. He has to strip down and wade out to recover his buck. His friends show up and wonder why he's standing naked next to his well earned prize. This was a story I have retold so many times, that it was worth the price of the book. Love Tim's bows too. I met him after reading this chapter when Business took me to Carson City. When I asked my customer where Kit Kat Rd. was, her jaw dropped as Tim's is the only business on this short street that is not a brothel. Another great story.

Fifteen years (as of 2004) after the publication it could use some updating and include some of the new bowyers but it's still worth every penny. I reach for it when I see a used bow of interest or I want to just relax with a re reading of a chapter or two.

Great book on history of Archary in America

Bought this book being avid supporter of Traditional Archery. I read this book 13 years ago (checked out from a library. When I started looking for the book again it took me 2 weeks to find it. Wasn't sure of the name of the book until I came across a couple pages I had copied for reference. Recommend it to anyone wanting to know a little bit of history on Archery from hunting methods to bow making methods.

Basically a Slightly Kinky Sex Scene

Super short (14 pages), super hot. It's not really a STORY, in that there's a character who wants something and tries to overcome an obstacle to get it, more of a sex scene. Not many clues the character(s?) are vampires, either, but as long as blindfolds and nipple clamps don't squick you out, still very enjoyable.
