It is a good book overall for anyone who either needs it for a psychology class or is interested in working with children. It is very useful and has a lot of useful facts, plus the price is a steal for a brand new copy.

They do not make this clear at all but this is the international version. Which means you can't resale it. If you are planning on keeping it this is the way to go because it's cheeper. If not don't buy this version!

it takes the fun out of child development

The paperback version is nice because it's cheaper... but after reading it, I think I would prefer the hard cover. Paperback books of a small size are fine, but this one is too large to work as a paperback. I have a hard time reading it because if I put it on my lap it sort of flops over and I can't see the whole page.

As to the content... I found it to be a little insulting. A lot of the points the text makes are sort of trite and obvious. It says things like "children are our future." This is true, but it doesn't seem like something that needs to be said in a college level textbook.

It looks pretty, with nice pictures and quotes in the margins, but there just doesn't seem to be much substance. I think a topic as interesting as child development should have a more interesting book.

Save Your Money

I have been trying to find more information on the various ways to autoregulate one's training and came across this after reading a bit about APRE in Siff's "Facts and Fallacies" and another article on EliteFTS. Siff only had about 2 pages worth of information, but there was nothing really added in this ebook.

Nothing worthwhile on why this works better than cycling loads. Nothing worthwhile of the author's own experiences with his clients/athletes. Even the history was already in Siff's 2 pages.

This amount to an article's worth of information that you could easily find searching online.The charts are not even formatted properly for Kindle making them practically useless. (You can find them on EliteFTS though.)

The only real "contribution" that the author made that I had not already stumbled across for free online was that you should deload every 4 weeks, which is such common knowledge that you have no business trying any form of autoregulation if you are not familiar with this protocol, and the suggestion that you only use the APRE protocol on a maximum of 2 exercises per week. He offers no real scientific or anecdotal justification for this claim though.

This was so worthless that I am going to ask for my money back. I have never done that before.

Needs assistance template examples, sucks for deadlifts

I bought this book after reading about it on a powerlifting website. I already knew the progression method from the free info online. I was hoping this book would have some actual templates, including assistance work, that has actually been used successfully on athletes. Unfortunately, it did not. It dove into the science supporting it (which I don't care for), then dove into the progression method (which I already knew).

The only thing it did offer was a method of how to set up cycles, which basically means how long to run each method (APRE3, APRE6, APRE10) until deloading or switching to lower/higher reps. He also has a unique method of deloading, different that how you'd deload on programs like Wendler's 531.

I tried running it regardless. I'm about 200 lbs, best lifts are a 365 squat/275 bench/460 deadlift. I had a squat day, bench day, and deadlift day every week, with made up assistance work. I did manage to hit a few rep PR's for my squat/bench, but it absolutely sucked for my deadlift. I think two sets to near failure every week is too much for deads. If I was going to try it again, I would probably try to do speed deadlifts or power cleans every other week, so that I only deadlift heavy once every two weeks. Or maybe I'd drop the second rep out set on deadlifts and do it every week. Just some food for thought if you're reading this and thinking about trying this program out.

Great resource and great format!

I enjoyed the textbook; found myself reading it even when I didn't have to. It's a terrific resource for anyone who works with children.
I also purchased the loose-leaf format because it was the least expensive at the time. I quickly fell in love with it! I only had to take the chapters I needed to class with me, so I didn't have to lug a heavy book around.
I will buy loose-leaf whenever possible from now on!

Great Child Development text

Whether you are studying psychology or just want some extra reading to know more about those in your life, a child development book is a great choice. After reading most of the book for class, I have started taking it everywhere with me. One can find me at the gym, at the park, or at my local coffee shop studying and watching those around me interact. This is a great text with its summaries, definitions, practice quizzes, and online guides. It is vital to learn more about human interaction and development. Give this text a chance and you will not be disappointed with your increase of knowledge and understanding about why people do the things they do.

I love this textbook.

I am not an avid textbook reader. Actually, I never open my books. However, I love this textbook. It is fascinating and well-written, consisting of an odd "flow" which makes it a pleasure to read. The kindle format is wonderful, though the tables do not show up on my Kindle and require Kindle for PC.

As textbooks go, this is my favorite. It is not boring, like so many of them, and yet is written in an easy-to-understand language. Buy it - you won't regret it.

A laugh on every page

I was found this book through a recommendation from someone I respect. I have no idea how it has zero reviews, because after ordering it, I promptly read the book from cover to cover in one day. No book has had me laughing as much as this one did - really smart, intelligent illustrations that you sometimes have to think about, but once it clicks, you'll almost certainly laugh out loud. This book was so genius I went to my girlfriend and told her it was the best thing I've ever read - I'm not totally sure that's true, but it was a tour de force from cover to cover. I would recommend it to any smart person with a sense of humor - and especially those from New York, because the NY references certainly will appeal better to those from that region. I am not from there, but still found most of it uproariously funny, incredibly creative, and well worth the purchase. A must buy.

Clearly, Christoph Niemann's brain works differently than everyone else's, because he isn't just a designer or an artist blogging for the New York Times (where he recently live-drew the running of the New York Marathon): His media include cookie dough, wires, Legos and even tiles (check out the MTA map bathroom he created for his subway-obsessed kids). He hilariously documents his love-hate affair with coffee (drawn with coffee on paper napkins, of course), creates schematics of sleep positions, and documents in classical scientific terms the challenges of dressing a young child. For those who are drawn (HA! GET IT?) to the process of it all, the afterword about the pains of having to be creative on command is a must-read. Actually, the whole book is a must-read. My favorite book of the year, and it's not even summer yet. Five stars!

Smart, Funny--A Great Gift!

This collection of witty and hilarious observations is so much fun to flip through. A collection from the author's visual blog for the NYTimes, everything from legos to pastry dough serve as the materials for his charming illustrations. I purchased this book as a gift for a dear friend this past Christmas, and if I didn't love that friend so much I would surely have kept the book for myself. In fact, I'm going to purchase a few more to keep on hand for housewarming and hostess gifts, and this time I'll keep one for myself. This book is delight for anyone, but especially New Yorkers and artist/designers.
