The novice ATMer's first stop.

This is primarily a book about astronomical mirror fabrication, and a very good one. Although it discusses the fabrication of three different telescopes, a 5" Newtonian, a 10" Newtonian and a 12" Cassegrain in some detail, don't imagine it's like Richard Berry's classic, "Build Your Own Telescope". Berry's book is concerned principally with fabrication of the mounts and includes cautionary, almost discouraging comments on optical fabrication, but nevertheless includes a couple of very good chapters on elementary optical work near the end of the book.
A "Manual for Amateur Telescope Makers" on the other hand, is more in the tradition of Jean Texereau's classic, "How to Make a Telescope", but is a far more readable and modern format. Using the three different telescope designs mentioned above, it introduces the reader to progressively more demanding concepts and techniques. Abrasive selection, grinding and polishing technique, Foucault testing, fringe testing flat mirrors, judging acceptable tolerances, defect correction, wire test, caustic test and telescope window fabrication are just a few examples.
There are a couple of features I really liked about this book. It has little "tip" boxes in the style of computer books. Things like "A Few Essential Rules for Polishing", "Dealing with a Severe Turned Down Edge", "Blocking Pitch, How Thick" or "Advantages and Disadvantages of the Caustic Test" to give just a few examples from dozens in the book. The text is always succinct, clear and authoritative. Did you know that the thinner the wire, the more precise the wire test and that the diameter of the wire should be slightly larger than the opening of the slit? There are lots of tips and answers to questions that many ATMers have no doubt asked and not been answered in Texereau or Ingalls' books.
In this day of cheap, value for money, mass produced telescopes, why bother to make a telescope anyway? The authors give the following reasons: it enables you to understand your own telescope more fully, it's exciting and it saves you money. Somehow these explanations seems to miss the excitement felt by those who have successfully completed quality instruments. Certainly you'll understand your scope far better than buying one off the shelf. However you'll probably be able to buy a reasonable second hand or even new small aperture (8" or less) scope for about the same price as making your own. Larger telescope fabrication does offer the chance to save quite a bit of money. Mastering techniques of optical fabrication, on the other hand, opens a new world of possibilities to you. Make your own large aperture mirrors, Cassegrain or TCT optics or whatever your imagination suggests. No longer are you confined to the design ideas of the engineers at Meade, Celestron or any other telescope makers, however worthy their thoughts may be. As the authors say, "... the figuring and testing techniques used for the 300mm mirror can be applied in the making of 375- to 500-mm mirrors."
My advice to readers concerning which books to buy about telescope making is this:
If you're a half reasonable handyman and want to get a mirror and build a scope for as little as possible, buy Richard Berry's "Build Your Own Telescope".
If you're a half-reasonable handyman and want a big mirror and scope, but optical fabrication is not your interest, Berry and Kriege's "The Big Dobsonian" just can't be beat. Buy a big mirror.
If you hanker for a deeper understanding of telescope systems and might ultimately like to make larger or more sophisticated optics and instruments of your own design, "A Manual for Amateur Telescope Makers" is the best place to start. If you've got something out of it but still thirst for knowledge, you should follow up with Texereau's, "How to Make a Telescope" and Ingalls' "Amateur Telescope Making". Then if you're still enthused, Willmann-Bell and some other publishers provide a large number of books of more specialized interest.
I have to give "A Manual for Telescope Makers" five stars although it does have some shortcomings. On many occasions it states how to do things without detailed explanations of why. It doesn't say why the authors chose a Coude type arrangement for the 300mm scope, for example, although the experienced ATMer will understand the advantages and disadvantages. Generally the book, although having a pervading tone of authority, is somewhat dogmatic and doesn't state any alternative views or areas of controversy, and it's also a little too brief in some places in order to achieve succinctness. The mount designs are briefly described, seem to be quite functional, but won't win awards for aesthetics, although they're a step up from Richard Berry's designs in "Build Your Own Telescope", which look about as boxy as a 1975 Volvo. Overall I'd say that a book like "A Manual for Telescope Makers" has been overdue and should be the first choice of novice ATMers in the decades to come. The big financial advantage of ATMing in the future will be in the fabrication of large mirrors and this book introduces the techniques involved. I love it.

Renaissance Man of the 20th Century

The late Herbert Simon was a veritable renaissance man. His autobiography, "Models of My Life," discusses the single thread that underlined all of his intellectual conquests in artificial intelligence, sociology, cognitive science, psychology and economics. This one thread, animated by philosophical positivism and ripe scientific thirst, was his deep obsession with modeling and researching decision-theoretic behavior.
It's interesting to note that even though decision theory (how intelligent agents percieve and act upon choices amid various modalities) serves as the impetus for Simons work, he uses "Models" instead of "Model" in the book's title. This is no accident. For you see, beautifully fitting of his memoir, this book delves into how Simon's one passion was his "heuristic" in choosing which of many paths he could have taken througout his life. The upshot: Simon's own life emulated the heuristic search (in AI) that he helped invent! Consequently, this lead him all over the globe, from Wisconsin to UChicago to Berkeley to Carnegie Mellon to China.
This book is also about the times of Simon: the positivistic turn in social sciences, the scientific fermet of the 1950's, the cultural tumult of the 60's, the death of behaviorism and the rise of cognitivism -- all along, peppered with intrigue of the politics of academia. Although the writing can get quite dry at times, his book is highly recommended.

Learn the Why and How of a Distinguished Life

Herbert Simon's research contributes to human knowledge in many different areas, including economics, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, and organizational behavior. In each of the mentioned areas, his contributions are ranked among the most important and influential that even a scientist who focuses solely in one area finds hard to achieve. The testimony is the top awards that the community in each discipline bestowed upon him--the Nobel prize is only one of which.
The secret of this interdisciplinary success is that he is, in his own word, a "monomaniac", studying only one thing--human decision process--for fifty years. The field of his own choosing is not bounded by usual academic disciplines, however, and he did study it from many different aspects, from the levels of individual cognition to organizational decisions, using tools as varied as mathematics, computer simulations, and human subjects.
This book detailed his own account of the various aspects of his life, personal and professional, in a sincere and direct prose. From the childhood that undoubtedly helped set the tone for his later accomplishments, the way he managed and nurtured new academic thoughts that later grown into full-fledged disciplines (artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and, less prominently, bounded rationality), to the philosophy of working and living including brief exposures to familial life, we can learn tremendously from hise xperience, decisions, and actions.
How could he achieve as much as he did? We can glean several lessons from his stories. He collaborated extensively. He learned a great deal from the outstanding individuals he respected. He had a love for truth and rigor in reasoning. An empiricist who firmly believed that any valid theory must be based on empirical facts, he did not hesitate to fight against widely held beliefs conflicting with facts. His work on bounded rationality which helped earn him the Nobel Prize is an outstanding case which his stubborn, and valid, arguments against mainstream theories brought a valuable alternative viewpoint to the world. Strong passion and the ability to break out of the mold and stand tall under storms are important characteristics exemplified by many past giants, including Galileo, Columbus, and Einstein.
Not just a normal autobiography, but the story of a distinguished life we all can learn from.

This intellectual autobiography is not just a chronology of the particulars of a great intellectual life. It is a wonderful opportunity to obtain a coherent overview of the views and contributions of one of the twentieth century's great thinkers. Simon - political scientist with his Ph.D. from University of Chicago, founder of the new and emerging area of artificial intelligence, cognitive psychologist, Cargegie-Mellon faculty member, Nobel laureate for economics (1978), and contributing philosopher of science - was no dilitante. This book, which is written is a very accessible style, reveals the integrity and evolution of his thinking, which can be extracted only with relative difficulty from his large and diverse literary corpus. Loved this so much

I absolutely loved this Cinderella romance! Leigha is an absolute sweetheart who hasn't been treated like she deserves. Her sisters are witches and her ex is a loathsome toad who has left her financially devastated as well as emotionally trashed. She goes to the bar to drown a few sorrows, not to look for another man, but she catches the eye of the last guy anyone would ever expect her to attract. Dylan is crazy rich and mad hot, the sort of guy who belongs with models and strippers, and mostly that's what he's been with but he's tired of them. When he sees Leigha he's hooked because she's nothing like the women he's used to. He's gotta have her.

So here's where this series could have easily gone all Alpha Male, Og Make Fire, Take Woman To Cave, but Alexa Wilder doesn't go down that tired old path and thank goodness she doesn't. Instead she presents us with a filthy rich alpha male who doesn't suck. Dylan has this juicy center that he's not afraid to show around her, although it takes her a bit to realize it's not just an act. He treats her like a princess, both in and out of the bedroom. When her sisters first get a load of the two of them, well let's just say that scene is priceless comeuppance. There's some complications in the form of her ex who won't stay gone, but again Wilder avoids the usual trap of bringing in stupid, misplaced jealousy and anger (the apparent hallmark of most alpha males in romance books) to add drama and instead uses it to showcase what a freaking awesome guy Dylan is. I don't usually swoon over a leading man but this one had me reaching for the tissues. Wonderful romantic series with characters you'll fall in love with over and over.

This is my first read of Alexa Wilder and I must say right off the bat that I am so happy that I got this series. I had so much fun with Leigha Carmichael and Dylan Kane.

Leigha is having one of the worst runs of luck and she has to be bother with her twitty, stick thin sisters and of course her mom. She decides to have a drink before the hail storm begins. Just when she thinks she can take no more. In comes Dylan. She is not sure if she is being punked or what but this chance weekend will be grabbed with both hands and then some.

Leigha goes the distance and some with a crazy ex, an ass of a soon to be brother-in-law, two pain sisters, a mother with or without a clue, and a very sexy man that wants her. This BBW gave me all I could want and more.

“The moment he sees her across a crowded bar, Dylan Kane knows he wants her.” What would a woman give to know that this is what the man in her life was thinking the first time he saw her?

Could not put it down!

Leigha Carmichael is drowning her sorrows in a bar at an exclusive hotel in Las Vegas when a devastatingly handsome stranger sits next to her to see if she's alright. When Dylon Kane saw this shapely beautiful woman across the room sitting by herself, he knew he wanted her in his bed. As she pours her heart out to him, he offers her a solution and a proposition. He'll pretend to be her date for her sister's wedding that weekend, if she promises to be his for the weekend. What starts out as a solution to her dilemma, turns into a sizzling fling. Dylon never expected to fall for this intelligent and beautiful woman, he thought once the weekend was up he would let her go.
I loved this series. The chemistry between Dylon and Leigha was off the charts. This is my first book by this author but I can't wait to read more.

Slow beginig, beautiful ending

When I went through the first few chapters of this book it seemed like it's going to be tough read. Too technical and without enough practical examples. However the second half of th book, last few chapters in particular were well worth the reading. I still wish there would be a bit more examples of positive reinforecement through real life stories. That's why I give it 4/5.

I recomend it to anyone who want's to learn about good leadership practices that are proven by science and not just another fad.

The workplace environment seems to never stand still and is always in a state of flux. This book, a revised and updated version of a previously well-received aid, seeks to address troubling issues and get the best out of employees through positive reinforcement.

There are so many areas that can be touched upon by positive reinforcement and some of the areas that might need the closest attention are those that sit higher up in the organizational chart… if only the message could get through! The author, in this fairly accessible book, offers up a range of proven strategies that can be used within companies of all shapes and sizes. This is not a book that just talks a fine talk with faux inspirational messages and hopeful words. Instead it leverages the latest research, in-field actual implementation and the author’s wealth of real-world experience to great effect.

When deployed, there are so many things that this book can assist with, such as creating recognition systems that will benefit the company and be appreciated by the employees, boost innovation, increase workplace knowledge, motivate and engage employees for greater performance wins and even shape behaviour-in-general. Of course, this is not a ready-written script that you can implement overnight. A lot of work remains to be done, although the author gives you a great start and is effectively holding your hand in the shadows. There is a lot of potential being offered in relatively few pages.

The author is not shy of giving opinions that may have you wonder what you’ve actually read! The author admits she is on a crusade to “stamp out the use of common sense in business”. You will need to read the book to find out what this possibly heretical move may be, but it does make sense when you read the motivation behind it. There are quite a few strong opinions being offered yet one may say they are justified and worthy. It is not that things are being said to shock for shocking’s sake; on the contrary… Some readers may stumble on the overly-narrative style of the book, yet it is worth trying to push past this barrier if you hit it as the book’s messages are worth it.

This is definitely a book you could get a lot out of. Arguably it is not just going to help you within business as elements may relatively easily be transferred to more social and private settings too.
