A good supplement, a not so good textbook

While this book does not go into software and applications thereof, it is nonetheless an excellent introduction for a beginner. I had previously purchased (and worked through most of) The Complete Idiot's Guide to Statistics, but this book really takes more time in the hand-holding stage, simply explaining the concepts, reducing them (which could be a drawback for some people) to their basic fundamentals. So I don't see this a textbook, necessarily, but a supplement to one. The first four or five chapters to this make an excellent primer for whether statistics will be relevant to the reader, and it never really gets too aggressive in its presentation of the math beyond that. And, as has been already pointed out, there is no discussion of applied software.

I would give this three stars for its simple approach, but it is named "U Can", and it is not meant to be a stand alone source of information. I think for it purpose it does very well.

But be clear: This will not be sufficient if you are taking a statistics class, but it might help to clarify basic concepts that get rushed past with more detailed information sources. Bear in mind I am an enthusiast, I do not study math for school - so my opinion should be gauged accordingly. Even so, this is a good book to pair with a more 'conventional' textbook. Recommended in that context, or to see if you have an active enough interest in statistics to explore the subject further.

Nice coverage if it was written in the 1960s

I teach university level statistics and I find this book to be lacking because it covers no modern statistical methods and it has no coverage of analysis software. If you are taking a high school level statistics class where you are not allowed to use a computer and if your teacher is still using methods from the 1960s this is not bad at all. In general the writing and the graphics are nice and clear if you want to do things like calculate a median (or draw a box plot) by hand. Nobody in their right mind works like this any more. Perhaps worse is the fact that fundamental statistical topics are missing. Bayesian statistics, which are the backbone for a huge number of modern methods are not even mentioned in the index.

If you need something to supplement your work in high school class that stresses hand calculations consider this. If you are not stuck working like the early 1960s consider OpenIntro Statistics: Third Edition instead. It is clear and has great coverage of both SAS and R on the books website.

BRAVO FOR STATS FOR DUMMIES!!!!

PHEW! Finally something that makes Stats more fun and interesting for teens. I happened to like stats in school and was disappointed when the concept and importance wasn't discovered by my students. Stats for Dummies is done exactly as the other "Dummies" collections are. Everything is explained in full detail. You receive the simplest of instructions that are easy to understand and help grades go up instead of down. This is a must need for every student who is struggling in their Stats class.

recommended mandatory reading for every human being

this is a unique,thorough. and entertaining-yet-serious description of how we should all treat others..... NOT an instruction book, nor a book of rules.....simply how to show respect to our fellow human beings. The hardback edition is much easier on the eyes than the softcover/paperback edition.

Short and sweet. For anyone who loves to get a hand-written thank you note, a birthday card in the mail, or the perfect gift just because-this book is for you. Donald McCullough first is a magical writter, and second a wise and kind teacher.
We need to get back to the nature of caring and doing the little things that make human life special. Saying please and thank you are such fundimental human feelings, the loss of these words in our language will no doubt be the loss of the very threads that help to create the weaving which is the nicer side of our human family.
The gift for all ocassions (I purchased 20 of them!) and a great place to start with the kids. Help us keep the sweetness of human kindness alive, read and enjoy "Say Please, Say Thank You...!

I wish I could drop millions of copies of this book from the sky. It should be required reading by every human being. Has the author been on Oprah? Larry King? Good Morning America? Today? Rosie? How about a PBS special? If so, I'm sorry I missed those segments. If not, then where's his publicist? Can we get rid of Dr. Laura and replace her with Donald McCullough?
It would be such a lovely world if we were all to get back to the basics of mutual respect and consideration. There would be a lot less stress in today's world if everyone followed the very simple principles in this book.
Buy it, read it, share it, and most importantly, DO IT. You'll stand out among the herd--that's for sure.

This is the diary of a Black man after World War II. College educated, from a well-mannered, professional family, Ricardo Braithwaite is from British Guiana. He is in London after serving in the RAF and can't find a job. No one wants to hire a Black engineer. So he takes a job at a rough East End school. At first the students and parents treat him with open racially motivated disdain, but he doesn't take the bait. Instead he behaves with dignity and, to their surprise, treats those who are cruel with the dignity and respect they have never experienced. He is an anomaly to them...a well-spoken Black man who behaves like an absolute gentleman in all situations. He addresses the female students as "Miss". He discusses the real life challenges that these students will face when the graduate. He is unlike any teacher they have ever known.

Excellent Reading - For Serious Readers Who Think About What They Read

For me, having seen and loved the movie long before I ever read the book, the book is a let down. But if I had read it first, I likely would have felt differently. To Sir With Love is a novel that should rank up there with To Kill A Mockingbird, the story told is that good. And don't get me wrong, I enjoyed reading the book, which I first read probably 30 years ago, but the movie will always be my preferred version. Its one of those enlightening novels that come along every so often, telling the story from the viewpoint of one person who is being candid with the thoughts, sights, and ideas encountered. This is more than an easy evening's read, and to do it justice, you really don't want to rush thru it but stop and think and savor all the new ideas, new visions, etc., that you are reading about.

Still a Classic

I loved the movie with Sidney Poitier and I was curious how the book would read. I needn't have worried--the movie followed the book faithfully. Rick Braithwaite, a young black man, comes to England after the war with high hopes of using his military training to procure a good job. No one will hire him because of his color. A stranger suggests he try teaching, so he does. The way he turns a group of rowdy lower class students into well-behaved young men and women is as heartwarming as it can be, and I really enjoyed reading it.

A much-needed learned physician's view of vegan eating

I find this book to be such a refreshing break from the typical diet drivel put out by "big-name" physicians like Atkins. Dr. Klaper knows his nutrition, knows his medicine, and even knows his foods (the recipes are excellent.) With his kind heart, he shares the best way to save yours.

This book changed my life, for real

Dr. Michael Klaper's book "Vegan Nutritrion: Pure and Simple" changed my meat-eating-meat-loving life, pure and simple. I've been an omnivore all my life (still am) and love the taste of meat. I do have qualms about the moral issues of meat-eating, but never cared enough to limit the sweet pleasure of a great steak, fish, shellfish, lamb, chicken, or dairy product. I now eat these delicacies only in small quantities due to the influence of Dr. Michael Klaper.

Dr. Klaper's "Vegan Nutritrion: Pure and Simple" approaches vegan nutrition as just that - nutrition. It's the only book that has influenced me, and only because of its nutritional approach. Dr. Klaper says the human body has no nutritional requirement for animal products, and makes a fact-based, well-researched case supporting his claim. He outlines how the human body is not built to process animal products, and why the natural building blocks of animal products are harmful to the human body.

Due to Dr. Klaper, I lost my taste for all that delicious meat, shellfish, and dairy. I still eat it once in a while, but I consider it a treat vs. every-day basic. As a result, my body is lighter, I have more energy, my mind is clearer, and my life expectancy is longer. Thank you Dr. Klaper!!

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about human nutrition!

About the Author
Mark M. Lowenthal has thirty-six years of experience as an intelligence official in the executive and legislative branches of government and in the private sector. The only primer available in English

I am an intelligence professional and I know both the author and the subject of this book intimately. Dr. Lowenthal's book represents the *only* available "primer" on intelligence that can be understood by Presidents, Congressmen, the media, and the public.

Dr. Lowenthal's book focuses on the U.S. Intelligence Community itself--the good, the bad, and the ugly. He is strongest on analysis and the politics of intelligence, somewhat weaker on collection and counterintelligence covert action. There is no other book that meets the need for this particular primer, and so I recommend it with enthusiasm.

If you do not like the book, you definitely should not consider a career in intelligence.

Outstanding

I purchased the book for a graduate class, this fall. I was actually surprised at the content; based on prior readings of intelligence affairs they lacked the changes since the September eleventh attacks. The author takes a broad look at the theater and sets the pace for the remaining chapters. The book is well written and very informative on present relationships and laws within the intelligence community and their clients.

The information is useful for someone who wants to learn more about the intelligence community. However, the book could have easily been condensed and would be more functional if the same themes were not reiterated in every single chapter. Each section contains relevant information, which can be located if you are willing to skim past the redundant fluff language. If you know nothing about IC, then I would recommend this book, but I did not give it a higher rating because I think it would have been helpful to have a book with this type of content organized in a way that readers could look-up or locate specific information without having to read through the whole thing like a novel.

PERHAPS TOO TECHNICAL FOR THE NAKED LAYMAN; AN EXCELLENT SURVEY OF INCARNATIONAL THEOLOGY

Certainly I find reading this a bit thick without the gentle assistance of a supportive professor and the force of raging theological classmates, but perhaps you will do better with this excellent if highly academic, but very real text.

God is alive today within our Body, and we so often now forget this truth and denigrate ourself and one another, when we are actually tearing down with insult, torture and homicide the Temple erected by Jesus Christ and God the Creator, rather than receiving one another, including the stranger, with love, humility, compassion, profound respect and gentleness as commanded.

This excellent book, published in Britain (ironically by the Cromwell Press) and in the USA by Eerdman over ten years ago, weaves into one whole and seamless cloth the theological thought of Father Karl Rahner (as in Mary, Mother of the Lord: Theological meditations), Father Charles Curran (as from Themes in Fundamental Moral Theology) , then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (from his Communio article "Concerning the Notion of Person in Theology" of 1990) and much from then Pope John Paul II, including Original Unity of Man and Woman Catechesis on the Book of Genesis, and his Reflections on Humanae vitae: Conjugal morality and spirituality, as well as several others from this very prolific and productive Pope.
