A nonfiction piece of work that reads like fiction!

Because I only read nonfiction, it was nice for a change to read a nonfiction book that read like a novel.
I chose to read this book as I wanted to read of a life story in Thailand, to learn more about the country, it's country side, it's cities, and it's people. Sadly, because there is so much poverty in Thailand, it affects many uneducated people's choices in terms of survival and financial gain. And that is where human bondage and prostitution, entwined with tourism, are all incorporated with this non-cycle of poverty.

This is a story of a young woman/child and her child. When her family realizes their daughter is pregnant they through her out of their home. She had less than meager means to financially care for herself and her beautiful baby. So a girl friend, knowing of her poverty stricken plight, offers to take her baby to her family farm in the countryside and let her stay there until the young mother could financially take back her child. However, there was no family farm...it was a hoax in an area in the country where there was only dishonesty and despair. Just hours after her friend took the baby, the child was used and abused for the gain of many other people--for years on end. Yet, there were times when this child did receive love from good people who were trying to get by themselves, only having what seemed like few, precious people with loving moments to give this child, but not a lifetime.
All the while the mother grew up and changed. And for 20 years she searched for her daughter after finding their demise.
This story is quite provoking, interesting, intriguing, and moving all the time. The final chapter will certainly captivate you in it's own way.
Enjoy the story. I did and I recommend this book because it is true.

Mango Rains- Great Read

This is the best book I've read in years. It brought me to tears in places.

Great insights into Thai culture and people, but even if you are not familiar with Thailand you will be captivated by this story. It is a story about humanity that will move you. If this were fiction it would seem unbelievable. The fact that it is based on a true story is remarkable.

There are a lot of "foreigner meets Thai lady" books published in Thailand. There are a great many "I survived the hell of a Thai prison" books, and a few "Golden Triangle Drug Gangster hard-bitten private eye" books from the region. This is nothing like any of those. This is a story that will hook you immediately and cause you to cheer for the main characters and cry along with them.

I was at a party recently, after just finishing Mango Rains. I was still so touched by the book I told the story to the group in a 10 minute narrative, and they were spellbound- not by me, but by the story. When I got to the end and said, "Lek found out the song was about her," I choked up. One person remarked, "that was the most amazing story I've ever heard."

Mango Rains

Mango Rains immerses the reader in the day to day life of a mothers decades long search to find her lost daughter. It is superbly written with a unique insight into the struggles of daily life in Thailand. It depicts life in Thailand in exquisite detail, from the simple life in small towns, and rural farms, to the more seedy side of life in the big city. I found myself drawn into this story, not just as a reader, but almost as an observer. The Author writes with such detail that at times I could literally "see" the scene unfolding as if watching a movie! Bravo, Mr. Dorothy, well done!
I found Mango Rains not only interesting and enlightening, but extremely moving, and difficult to put down.
Dan Dorothy has opened a window to the world with this book, showing what life is like for the Thai people.

A Spanking Story that is STORY

I'm a difficult reader. I apologize. (Not really) I want the hot spanking scenes-and the hot sex--but I insist on a story. I want developed characters that aren't just cutouts rubber stamped on the laptop screen. I know there are readers who are quiet, shy, maybe timid. Apparently, there really are women who act like Reality TV stars. Of course there are women comfortable acting impulsively, in a carefree manner, maybe even carelessly, regardless of the situation. And granted, not everyone is comfortable being in charge. But, for better or worse,I was born, and encouraged by nurture, an alpha woman. I want a heroine who is a woman I can relate to, strong, courageous, independent, mature, competent, AND (This is really important): She can't be what we romance writers call TSTL (Too Stupid To Live).
Also, (go ahead, shoot me!), I want a plot--one that is credible. While we modern, strong women may still want the alpha wolf as a partner, we can't all be kidnapped by slavers and sold to Sheiks, or time travel back to the Scottish highlands in the 1800s.
Rowan Delaney is a woman I can relate to, and her situation, while it may be a tiny stretch for me personally, is credible.
As another reviewer commented, one of the major challenges to a writer in this genre is the non consensual spanking scene. Jade pulls it off. I could completely buy the entire scene. Rowan is extremely attracted to Vince and decides to make her move, clad in only his cast off white dress shirt. But she loses confidence and bungles the scene. Vince, being male, misinterprets, feels played, gets pissed. Rowan retreats and goes for a run to sort herself out, forgetting Vince's prohibition about putting herself in danger. She doesn't see herself as in danger going for a run. Been there--done that--felt the wrath....)
Another one of my apparently difficult desires for a book is that it be a novel, not a short story, not a novella. It's not easy top deliver the other things I want in 20-30 thousand words. Jade has given readers a book.
Last but not by no means least, Jade gives the reader an idea of what comes next for one couple, after the initial settling in power struggles are resolved; Vince and Rowan add a dos of dominance and submission to their everyday lovemaking-which rings true for me.....

I became a fan of Jade Cary the minute I started reading Point of it All. I was waiting for this one. I'm also waiting for the next one....

Loved the suspense and romance

I love to read suspense novels and I love to read spanking stories as well and with this book I got them together!! I was anticipating the release of this book and bought it the day it came out. I expected big things as I have read the other books by this author and I was NOT disappointed!! This story had suspense, drama, romance and it is so well written you just keep turning the pages and lose track of time...well I did anyway :) Fantastic plot, great characters with some HOT chemistry made this one a winner!!

Addicting Book

Jade Cary has been one of my favorite authors since her first novel "The Point of it All". That's why, as soon as I heard of this new book release, I rushed to buy a copy.
I'm glad I did, "Bella Rosa" is the best book of its kind.
It's a story that entrap, captivate and make you stay up all hours reading.

As for "The point of it all", the story could easily stand alone and be a good suspence novel, but with addition of erotic elements and spanking scenes this book is certainly a must-read for all spanking lovers.

Last but not least, unlike most of the other offerings on the market, "Bella Rosa" with its 35 chapters is an actual full-length story.

Now, in the long awaited second edition, Atwell reflects on the next ten years of her experience, rethinks and clarifies old methods, and demonstrates new, more effective approaches.

The second edition still urges educators to "come out from behind their own big desks" to turn classrooms into workshops where students and teachers create curriculums together. But it also advocates a more activist role for teachers. Atwell writes, "I'm no longer willing to withhold suggestions and directions from my kids when I can help them solve a problem, do something they've never done before, produce stunning writing, and ultimately become more independent of me."

More than 70 percent of the material is new, with six brand-new chapters on genres, evaluation, and the teacher as writer. There are also lists of several hundred minilessons, and scripts and examples for teaching them; new expectations and rules for writing and reading workshops; ideas for teaching conventions; new systems for record keeping; lists of essential books for students and teachers; and forms for keeping track of individual spelling, skills, proofreading, homework, writing, and reading.

Not just for middle school!

This year, for the first time, I am using many of Atwell's ideas in my English classroom, and it is working a hundred times better than I had ever dreamed! Most specifically, I have patterned my writing instruction for my students, grades 6-10, after her writing workshop. Kids who hated writing before now cheer when they know it's a Wednesday or Friday--our writing days. My students are writing more than they ever did, and they enjoy it. I also love it, because their writing is suddenly interesting and full of life.
Although this book makes a terrific handbook, be prepared to make some changes for your own classroom. As Atwell says, these are the methods that work for her in her specific situation. I have made up other forms and other guidelines that fit my school's curriculum and makeup. For example, I do the workshop two days per week. I also have specific types of writing required for the student portfolios, then they may work within those limits. I found this helpful so my students would try a variety of writing, and also fit the district curriculum requirements. Still, the premise, in both theory and practice, is extremely helpful and inspiring. Read the book, then adapt it to your own class.
As for the reading section, I do some reading workshop, but it is not quite as successful. The weekly literary letters are quite cumbersome, for example. The theory is still interesting, and may work better for other classes.

Fantastic teaching strategies given by Nancie Atwell

I very much enjoyed Nancie Atwell's book. Nancy's style of writing allows for easy reading. She presents many useful strategies for teaching reading and writing at the middle school and high school levels (the use of journals to discuss literature). Nancie joins the aspects of reading and writing in the English program to create an almost no-fail system to teaching literature. Great emphasis is placed on the idea that the more students are exposed to reading, writing, and literature, the more appreciative of literature they will become. Students will gain a sort of respect for literature if they are exposed to a steady, constant stream of reading.
One aspect I really did enjoy in Nancy's book were her anecdotes and stories of her own experiences about learning and becoming a teacher. These stories gave a "real flavor" to the book. Nancy's book wasn't about presenting teachers with boring, mechanical information on how to teach reading and writing. Her book presented real strategies for real teachers and real students.

She gives many examples of dialogue she, as a teacher, has had with students showing the reader how she handled particular situations that had come up. It leaves no question unanswered. I believe this book is very helpful to teachers who wish to teach this method. Atwell captures her audience by using real stories and references to experts in this field who have studied this technique for years. Although this is a very involved technique and some beginners may feel overwhelmed by the detail, I highly recommend it.

A rare glimpse into the esoteric connection of African and Masonic traditions.

"Symbolically Speaking, Vol.1: African Lodge #1-The Context", should be on the book shelf of all Prince Hall Freemasons. It is that good. The author, Brother Jeff Menzise, PH.D., displays an expertise in his subject matter by being able to link the esoteric traditions of Mother Africa with the esoteric traditions of Freemasonry. Very few authors can do this in such a credible way because many of them lack the experience of real initiation into the esoteric traditions of Africa. In the chapter entitled " Ritual", Doctor Menzise asks an important question which should be contemplated by American Masons of all races during this current age of materialism, immorality, self-centeredness, violence, and selfishness: "What if at the conferring of the highest degree in Masonry, the newly R MM actually resurrected to a new state of mind and purpose? He goes on to say; " To our credit, many do actually report such a transformation, similar to what is experienced when a Muslim makes his Hajj, or when a Christian is baptized in the Jordan River, however, this is not the norm, nor is it the real expectation of many Brothers that go through the process". Wow, serious Freemasonry, indeed. This wonderful book includes a Table of Contents, Index, a lovely Image Gallery, and a Foreward by the world renowned Prince Hall Masonic Historian, Brother Alton Roundtree of the 33rd degree. There is also a section of appendixes towards the end of the book which offers a rare glimpse of the Man and Brother known as Prince Hall. This book offers a unique blueprint of the greatness which is Prince Hall Freemasonry and is a guide on the direction towards further greatness it may achieve. This is an important example to emulate for our mainstream Brother Masons as well and they are also encouraged to read this wonderful book for their own enrichment. Brothers, buy this book today! It has my highest recommendations.

Inspiring!

First let me state I know the author personally but the review I write is from the heart. I could not put the book down every page reaffirm for me why I chose my path and why I need to keep seeking the Light! If you are new to, or have little knowledge about traditional African spirituality or Freemasonry, this is your introduction.

It flows nicely and is not a difficult read, it gives you a glimpse and makes you hungry for more. I eagerly await Volume 2.

Highly Recommended, Easy to Read, and Greatly Enjoyable Young Adult Paranormal Series!!!

I loved this book almost as much as the original Vampire University. It took a little bit longer to read only because I had other reading that I also had to do so I reluctantly stopped and picked it up the next day. Actually I picked it up the day after that but I'm not being nit-picky.

Set in the fictional town of Eden Island, NY, VanCamp University attracts an abundance of paranormal creatures such as Vampires, Gargoyles and, of course, Leprechauns. This book picks up just a few days after the 1st book ends and itself only covers a few days of time.

I'm not going to say much because I'm afraid I would give away too many spoilers. Let's just suffice it to say that this is a really good book. There are four books in the series, and this is number two. I have the other two on my Amazon Wish List to read as soon as I can afford them.

I strongly recommend this series for those who enjoy Young Adult Paranormal books. If you're looking for romance then this ain't the series for you. Two books and so far there is none. But if you like the Young Adult Paranormal genre then this is a terrific series. I highly recommend it.

A really light read. Way too short though. I barely sunk my teeth into it and it was finished...with the promise of another book coming soon.
The first book in the VU series is the same, they should just be one book.
I like the concept, and the mythical lore we are being shown. The writing style is good.

I just have an issue with the trend for e-books being put out way too short and stretched out into a series. There are so many free and cheap e-books out there that even though I've thoroughly enjoyed a book, if its too short I often forget about it and never bother checking for new releases of the series in the future.

I hope I don't forget this series, it is a great story and an easy read. I can really picture the environment the plot is set in and the characters are clearly defined and loveable.

Robert Ackerson was born and raised in Rockland County, which until the mid-fifties, was a region of New York State. Good historical reference

A great book for Jeep history buffs. It goes into good detail from the beginnings of Jeep up to their acquisition by Chrysler. It is a little sketchy in a couple of areas. For instance, the CJ-3B has only about a paragraph and military models after WWII are not even mentioned. It does go into pretty good detail on all the other civilian models as well as covering the "movers and shakers" in early Willys and Kaiser times. I find it a good resource for answering many detail questions on history as well as options and availibility for various models and years. I would love to see this book in a revised edition that covers the newer Jeeps (and the few "holes" it has).

The best, perhaps embodied by Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird , combine judgment and principle with something of the scholar's love of the pursuit of truth. Yet Dan Quayle questions lawyers' basic honesty and trustworthiness at the annual American Bar Association convention. Kronman (law, Yale Univ.) worries about the decline of the "lawyer-statesman," that lawyer who possesses more than just technical proficiency in legal persuasion. Kronman sees Abraham Lincoln and, more recently, the late Chief Justice Earl Warren as just such "lawyer-statesmen." Both possessed those traits of prudence, wisdom, and judgment that counted far more than legal expertise. Their absence underlies the crisis facing the American legal profession. Painfully Beautiful

:This book is beautiful. It aches for a time when the practice of law included public service. When did the function of law schools become feeding graduates to the bottom line practice of large law firms? Either everyone contemplating law school should read this book, or they should be banned from access to it. Remember, Kronman was dean of the yale law school.

Out of Touch Academic Elitism

Kronman seems to have missed the boat on the plain language movement in law. Justice Scalia would be very disappointed in him.

The Lost Lawyer is out of touch academic elitism at it's best. It outlines the ideal of the Lawyer-Statesman and then spends the rest of the book explaining attacks and erosion on the Lawyer-Statesman ideal. It's academically lazy, when you purport a fiction as reality, it's easy to find reality incompatible with it.

My question to Kronman is, if we've deviated from the lawyer-statesman ideal and lost our way, why did it take 200 years to abolish slavery and what was Thomas Jefferson thinking with Sally Hemmings? It wasn't very statesmanlike. What was Abe Lincoln doing when he negotiated slavery. In his letter to Conkling, Lincoln revealed that he gave 100 days notice of the emancipation proclamation, and that he wouldn't issue it if the rebelling states returned their allegiance. Does the lawyer-statesman negotiate the human and civil rights of men for political gain? I doubt this.

The Lawyer-Statesman is a fine ideal to strive for, but don't try to tell me that we once had it and lost it. If you want to move towards it, fine, I can accept that, but arguing that we've come from it is lost. John Adams defending the British soldiers in Boston is no different than Stephen Vladeck defending suspected terrorists at Guantanimo Bay. Nothing has been lost, your just selectively looking for the purposes of your argument.

A Misfire Worth Reading

Charlotte Rampling, beautiful and tear-stained, has a minor breakdown midway through The Verdict--she's fallen for Paul Newman, the lawyer she's been assigned to seduce and spy on by her boss at the big, evil law firm. James Mason, the suave evil boss, consoles her with a drink and an apothegm: "You don't get paid to do your best," Mason says. "You get paid to win." That scene (expertly written by David Mamet) explains the legal profession in America and provides a summary of Kronman's argument. Kronman, the current Dean of Yale Law, bemoans the extinction of lawyers of sound judgment, prudence, and a concern for a range of interests--the client's, the law's, society's, etc. Lawyers who were actively involved with their community and their country, who were looked to as figures of wisdom, not avarice. But Kronman is more diagnostic than prescriptive. He's right--that breed of lawyer has all but vanished. Still, he provides little in the way of practical suggestions for correcting the problem. And his focus is on the profession and the law schools. His focus should be on the free market. Elite American law schools are catering to the needs of the large firms, which are catering to the needs of their corporate clients. To graduate marketable lawyers, the schools have to create skilled technicians. The hiring partner at a Wall Street Firm wants to know that an applicant has the stamina necessary to put in the hours, and the intelligence and tools needed to grind out competent work. No one is interested in his or her views about what might be a more prudent approach to the client's problem; his or her judgment is not only not demanded, it's unwelcome. Kronman's focus is too narrow. The legal profession has become the law business. Because that's what's demanded by clients, who pay the tab. So I think he should have examined the underpinnings of the free market system, which I favor but which is responsible for the shift in legal education and law practice. Also, how does one teach prudence? How does a vocational school--or perhaps any school--instil sound judgment? Furthermore, prudence and judgment are qualities that, like beauty, are in the eye of the beholder. Finally, Kronman's assertion that much of the problem arose when the large Protestant law firms started hiring Jews, African-Americans, women, and associates from the working classes and from second and third-tier schools sounds not only wrong, but bizarrely priggish and elitist in all the wrong ways. Kronman, as far as I can tell, has never practiced law for any length of time, nor has he toiled as a judge. He's spent his career locked in the Ivory Tower of academia, and his book is the high-toned result.

Chef Sarah Labensky
Currently a professor of culinary arts at Woosong University’s Sol International Culinary Arts School in Daejeon, Korea, Chef Sarah Labensky was previously Founding Director of the Culinary Arts Institute at Mississippi University for Women, as well as a professor of culinary arts at Scottsdale (Arizona) Community College. �Chef Sarah has also owned restaurants in Columbus, MS and spent many years as a working pastry cook and caterer. �She is co-author of On Cooking: A Textbook of Culinary Fundamentals (Pearson, 5/e update, 2014), The Prentice Hall Essentials Dictionary of Culinary Arts (Prentice Hall, 2007), and Applied Math for Food Service (Prentice Hall, 1997).

Chef Priscilla Martel
Priscilla Martel is a professional chef, educator and food writer with a special interest in artisan baking, the pastry arts and Mediterranean cuisines. She honed her cooking skills at Restaurant du Village, a country French restaurant opened in Chester, CT in 1979. Today, she operates All About Food, which holds several baking patents and collaborates with food manufacturers and restaurants to create innovative products, menus and marketing programs.

She is a visiting instructor at Boston University’s certificate program in the culinary arts. She speaks to consumer and professional organizations about baking, almonds and healthy cooking. She is a contributing writer for Flavor and the Menu Magazine and the culinary director of American Almond Products Company, a leading baking-industry ingredient manufacturer. �She is an active member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, Bread Baker's Guild of America and the International Association of Foodservice Editors.
