Fun to Read, and Something for Everyone
By John Guilbault
Let me start by saying that I love reading Lee Frost's books. His work always has a certain style that makes them fun to read. He never has that "I'm the master and this is what you must do" approach. He's more like the guy down the street who just discovered something new and runs over to tell you about it. The discovery might not interest you, but you'll still enjoy hearing about it.
That's kind of what this book is like. These photo projects are things Mr. Frost did to get his photographic juices flowing, so he decided to share them. The problem is, a lot of the projects he mentions aren't really projects. Shooting at first light, last light, in cloudy weather, etc, aren't so much projects as the basics of landscape photography. He also suggests trying old cameras, toy cameras and instant cameras. I'm thinking these suggestions won't be what most people had in mind as photo projects. So a one star deduction for that.
Now, he does have some good ideas in here. Creating a photo blog, using the internet to have a photo book published, shooting the changes in your hometown over time, etc. These are all good ideas to get you out of a rut. Add that to the fun writing style, and you've got a book that is worth your time and money.

Slightly disappointing; good stuff mixed in with ho-hum material
By Joanna D.
I was slightly disappointed in this book. There ARE some interesting, even unique things in here--how to set up your DSLR to do infrared, and how to effectively stitch up a panorama. Also a good project on time-lapse. But other things in here are hit-or-miss; the lomography chapters are nothing you couldn't find on the web, not a real project, the texture, graphical, weather chapters are tired material, and the food photography chapter is frankly inadequate. This book does a few things very well but over all, it's very uneven. Some "projects" will be new to you--or a good tutorial for the beginner. Other stuff is a complete yawn.
Good: panorama, looking for graphical subjects, architecture, infrared, water
Meh: food photography, texture, weather, using med format like TLRs (ok for those with money to spend on processing, dealing with vintage cameras)
Bad: Lomography and actionsampler projects.
Summary: hit or miss. Some great stuff, some not-so-great. Interesting reading in some spots, utterly dull in others.

to the point
By Claus Plapp
This book goes through the basic stuff of photography, what you should fokus on as a beginner. It's also a good reminder for those of you who know your basic tecnical skills but need some concrete ereas to focus on. Most of us need to make some choises and commit to some conscious and planned experimentations to get real progress. This book will help you with that. It also have some inspiring and informative sections on analouge toy camera photography.
