About the Author
Michelle Paver was born in central Africa but went to England as a child. After earning a degree in biochemistry from Oxford University, she became a partner in a London law firm but eventually gave that up to write full-time.
The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series came from Michelle's lifelong passions for animals, anthropology, and the distant past—as well as an encounter with a large bear in a remote valley in Southern California. To research the books, Michelle has traveled to Finland, Greenland, Sweden, Norway, Arctic Canada, and the Carpathian Mountains. She has slept on reindeer skins, swum with wild killer whales, and gotten nose to nose with polar bears—and, of course, wolves. The first four books have been made into widely acclaimed audiobooks, read by Ian McKellen.

Best book series to read to/with older kids

This entire series is absolutely wonderful and engaging. My children and I have found our favorite author! We are hooked on the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. The detail, descriptions and anthropological aspects of this series blows me away. This series helps us understand so much better how much of a connection people used to have with the earth and animals. It's truly a dream come true. The story is exciting, sometimes a little scary (which my kids love) sometimes sad, and full of joy, harmony with nature and deep friendship. We love it.

Addictive

These are set 6000 years ago, and a lot of good vs evil and a boy finding honor strength and courage. My son was absolutely riveted! He got books, one and two out from his school library, and loved them so much that I bought him the remaining four for Christmas. He finished them all by January 2nd. I realize he reads a little beyond his reading level, he's 8, but I'd say that any kid who is into reading , and has read and enjoyed Harry Potter, Rick Riordan and others would fine this series compelling. It was a great find!
